[?]\ Freda Brown, National Secretary of the Union of Australian Women, has returned from East Germany where she attended a meeting of the Women's International Democratic Federation Council as Australia's representative, helping to plan for the Fifth World Congress of Women, convened- by the W.I.D.F., to be held in Moscow, 24-29th June, 1963.M/ATCH for Freda's articles and lectures-as she alsa-vis— Ited the Soviet Union (particularly the Republic of Tashkent where formerly, women were kept in virtual subjection) and Indonesia. In the Soviet Union she was impressed by ' the improvements in life for the ordinary citizen noticeable since her last visit three years before. Freda studied the legal system (she was present at a divorce), and also how transport and housing problems are solved under socialism. Welcome home Freda! We are looking forward to hearing from you.? Parents whose children have won Commonwealth scholarships to the University will be surprised to learn that they will not be able to claim the £91 per year taxation rebate for dependent student children from 16-21. This is in spite of the recommendation of the Ligertwood Committee, on Taxation, made 18 months ago that this provision in the Act should be altered.Speaking at a meeting of trade union representatives of departmental storeBinployeesfrom —European countries, held in Budapest in 1962, Helene Mabille, secretary of the union covering these workers in Prance (the French Federation o't Workers in Commerce) said that in the European Common Market countries many agreements have been concluded between capitalist firms linked by interlocking shareholdings. She said there is no doubt that the capitalists in these countries will agree on establishing identical social advantages and wages based on the lowest standards and that they will particularly try to put the female wage rates at a still greater disadvantage in relation to male rates, a serious matter as women predominate in the industry. Helene Mabille said: "Our exchange of views enables us to realise the trend towards social regression in the capitalist countries and towards social progress in the socialist countries." If Britain joins the Common Market, British worker's will be tied to the social regression referred to.[?]
