Soekarno's second marriage. Indonesian press regrets the president's decision. Serious blow to the Indonesian women's movement. Fierce criticism of the "palace clique".
The delegation of women that met on Friday and Saturday about the much-disputed marriage of President Soekarno to Mrs. Soewondo visited the president's palace on Monday. The delegation of four ladies, led by Mrs. Kortowijono, chairwoman of the Perwari, stayed an hour at the palace. No statements were made about what was discussed. Meanwhile Soekarno's marriage remains the centre of attention. Also outside Indonesia, mainly in Malaya and the Philippines, the dailies devote front-page space to reports on this marriage. The Indonesian daily press is divided into two camps, one of which regrets the marriage as "not befitting a head of state" and the other holds that "Soekarno is entirely free to marry a second wife". The moderate paper "Keng Po" warns that political leaders and the press, through all kinds of trifles of little importance for the development of history, lose sight of the main line. People are making a fuss about the president's private affairs while all attention should in fact be directed at the political symptoms that recall the situation before the outbreak of the communist rebellion at Madioen in 1948, the paper says. The fuss made about the president's private affairs will not only bind the PKI (the communist party in Indonesia) more closely to the president, but will also benefit the PKI, because general attention is diverted from the preparations that the communist party is quietly making, according to this paper.
The paper "Doeta Masjarakat", which stands close to the government party Nahdatoel Oelama, regrets the president's latest marriage, since it "damages the standing and prestige of Boeng Karno and of the state". The paper hopes that the president's present advisers and the "palace clique" will be replaced by "men of character who dare to voice their opinion and do not say yes and amen to everything". The paper "Oetoesan Nasional" argues along the same lines, ascribing Soekarno's new marriage chiefly to the meddling of the head of the palace household service, the former general Soenardjo, who comes from a feudal milieu and is always intent on making his superior's life pleasant in every possible way.
"Enough to weep". The paper "Soeara Rakjat" (progressive-socialist opposition), published in Soerabaja, writes that "Boeng Karno" holds a place of his own in the heart of the majority of the Indonesian people and that the simple man therefore can hardly believe that he — and in his present position at that — entered into this marriage. One will keep asking: why, why and again why. The answer will probably not come, and those who still want to see engineer doctor Soekarno as Boeng Karno can only weep about it, the paper says.
Soekarno in crisis. The paper "Pikiran Rakjat", published in Bandoeng, stresses that in Indonesia, where society still has a feudal character and every action of the president can have a bad influence on Indonesian society, this marriage may cause unpleasant consequences in society. The paper further remarks that Boeng Karno is apparently going through a crisis at present and wonders how such a leader can lead a people that is itself also struggling with various crises. "To overcome his present crisis there is only one way: he must distance himself from the present palace clique."
"It is allowed". The paper "Daoelat Rakjat", published in Semarang, writes that Soekarno, as a Muslim, may certainly marry a second, third, even fourth wife. The Islamic paper "Pemandangan" justifies the marriage on medical and propriety grounds. "Indonesia Raya", which "at the request of many" printed another photograph of the Soewondo family, wrote among other things that Soekarno's private affairs influence Soekarno as president. Indonesian women have been fighting for decades for women's rights with regard to marriage, so that women should not merely be creatures whom one can marry at random. The president's latest marriage is a great blow to the women's movement, the paper says.
