DJAKARTA — Lieutenant-Colonel Untung, former commander of a battalion of President Soekarno's bodyguard, has confessed that he is responsible for the murder of six Indonesian generals. Untung is on trial before a special military tribunal for taking part in the coup of 30 September. A day earlier he had said that he had only given orders to three military units to take away the six generals and that he did not know what had happened to them afterwards. Yesterday he confessed that "taking away" also meant "killing".
Own initiative. To the question whether he had acted on the instructions of a particular group, Untung answered that he had acted on his own initiative. He denied that he was a member of the communist party P.K.I. Untung said he had wanted to save President Soekarno from a plot that was said to have been hatched by a "council of generals". He denied that he had made himself guilty of high treason.
Conviction. To the question whether he had proof for the existence of a "council of generals", Untung said: "It is my conviction and I have witnesses." The judge added that no witnesses were needed to confirm a conviction. Untung is not defended by the Dutch-born Mrs. Trees Sunito-Heyligers, but by an Indonesian jurist. Mrs. Sunito has refused to accept a fee for the defence of the communist leader Njono. She has asked President Soekarno for clemency for the condemned Njono. She expected that it could take a few months before a decision on the clemency request is made.
