ANALOGIE MET GEVAL VAN MONGINSIDI (Van onze correspondent) Batavia, 10 November.

=== [Page 1] === MURDER OF DUTCHMAN IN SOUTH CELEBES Arrest of gang leader stirs Indonesian press ANALOGY WITH THE MONGINSIDI CASE (From our correspondent) Batavia, 10 November. After the case of Wal[ter] Monginsidi, who was sentenced to death and executed for bestially cruel conduct towards the population as head of a gang in East Indonesia, the Indonesian world is now once again in great commotion because of the events in Masamba, in the former division of Luwu in South Celebes. The course of events is, according to reliable information, as follows: in the Luwu division calm prevailed for a good while, although recently there had been signs pointing to the possibility of disturbance of order, in which infiltrations were thought of, either from Java or from Bandjar. Last week, after a successful raid on a police post, a car was attacked in which were a Dutch tradesman, the representative of the Faroka factories, Pluyter, and a merchant from India. These two and the driver were taken along by the gang, after which the merchant from India and the driver were released, but Pluyter was murdered. The investigation has shown that a female member of the Makassar municipal council, Salawati Daud, who belonged to an extreme republican grouping, held a leading position in the gang. She was arrested by the East Indonesian troops. A pupil of the teacher-training school, accused of complicity, was also arrested. From these facts one could infer that this is a clearly demonstrable crime, in which the circumstance that the Indian was released by the gang and the Dutchman murdered gives the matter a political tint. Although the case in itself is clear, a few questions remain unanswered: was the murder indeed committed with the help of infiltrators; to what extent is there then an organisation of larger scale? As was the case with the Monginsidi affair, this case too has been placed by the Indonesian press and prominent Indonesians in the light of the freedom struggle, Mrs. Salawati being presented as a heroine of freedom who was arrested by the 'belanda's' [Dutch] and who is therefore a martyr. The upright and influential Mr. Maria Ulfah Santoso, the leader of the Indonesian women's congress, declared in Djokja that she was very shocked by the arrest of Salawati, "especially in connection with the R.T.C. [Round Table Conference], which must result in a clearing of the atmosphere". Ulfah was to consult with the women's congress about taking steps with regard to the Dutch military measures (it may be borne in mind that the arrest was carried out by the own authority organ of the constituent state of East Indonesia). The authoritative Batavia paper Pedoman wrote in an article that the harsh Dutch military measures taken in South Celebes at the time can be regarded as a factor in this matter. "The thousands of victims that the population made at that time have left a deep impression," which the judge, the paper says, must take into account in determining his sentence. The Chinese-Malay press in Batavia, which likewise treats the matter in an article, writes in a mildly reproachful tone about the Dutch. In this case too, however, a further analogy with the Monginsidi affair can be predicted: as soon as the full and disgusting facts concerning the Monginsidi case became known, the clamour about this executed gang leader subsided as quickly as it had arisen.
