• „Vijand is geland"

Indonesia: Slap for Omar Dhani
PRESIDENT SOEKARNO has managed to prevent an armed clash between the army and the air force. This is one of his merits after the failed coup. But he was witness to a violent personal conflict. The army had accused the air force of having secretly given the Indonesian communists military training and supplied them with Chinese weapons. Air Vice-Marshal Omar Dhani denied that the air force knew anything about the Chinese weapons. In Soekarno's presence General Soeharto gave Omar Dhani a slap in the face and tore the insignia from his uniform. After this personal quarrel Omar Dhani could no longer be kept in Djakarta. He was sent to the Netherlands to work out further the plans for the construction of an Indonesian aircraft factory.
Former premier poisoned?
NOW that everybody is attacking the communists, the Islamic daily Soeara Islam has dished up an old story: premier Djoeanda is said to have died in 1963 after drinking wine from Communist China. He collapsed at the official opening of the night club Nirwana on the top floor of Hotel Indonesia. The accusation of Soeara Islam provoked an official denial from the cabinet presidium. Premier Djoeanda had died of heart failure, the statement said. Second deputy premier Johannes Leimena and third deputy premier Chaeroel Saleh were personal witnesses of Ir. Djoeanda's death, according to the official statement.
False accusation
IT is rough, cruel but also comical between the communists and those oriented to the right. An accusation that someone is a communist is enough to cause him a lot of trouble. Soekarno told that he had to settle an incident between company directors. There were two members of management, A and B, at a state trading house. The girlfriend of director A had "defected" to director B. Making use of the present purge campaign, director A publicly proclaimed that B was a communist and had relations with the 30 September Movement. When Soekarno himself had intervened, the accusations turned out to be unfounded.
"Enemy has landed"
THE communists in Central Java abuse Malaysia to sell the rural population a pig in a poke [lit. 'turnips for lemons']. An old desa man, Karjo, took part in the storming of the cattle market of Bojolali [Boyolali]. Captured by the army, he told how he was "recruited". Early in the morning the desa people were woken by the communists with loud voices. When Karjo came outside he saw many of his desa fellows already gathered. They had sickles, machetes, bamboo spears and other stabbing weapons with them. Karjo had to join them. A young man, member of the communist youth organisation Pemoeda Rakjat [Pemuda Rakyat], addressed the desa people with a revolver in his hand. "Brothers," he said, "now the moment has come to attack. The enemy has already landed, namely the army of Tengkoe Abdoel Rahman (the Malaysian premier) and of the nekolim (neo-colonialists and imperialists)." "What do they look like?" asked a desa man. "They wear red berets and yellow-green mottled uniforms. On the chest they wear the letters RPKAD," was the answer. In fact the RPKAD men were the loyal commando troops of the army, brought in from West Java to suppress the communist rebellion in Central Java.
Little mother Soebandrio
VICE-PREMIER SOEBANDRIO is accused of communist sympathies. For his part he claimed that there are newspapers financed by the American secret service, the CIA. "No, I did not mean it like that," he said later. "I meant that we must now be careful of the practices of the CIA." With that denial, however, his prestige fell even further, for his speech had been recorded on tape and broadcast three days in a row by Indonesian radio. Tens of millions of Indonesians could hear him say: "I have drawn the attention of minister Achmadi (of information) to the fact that there are papers in Djakarta that receive funds from the CIA."
Not only Soebandrio himself but also his wife has a hard time. As chairwoman of the federation of women's associations, KOWANI, she announced that the communist women's movement GERWANI had been expelled from her organisation. The paper Berita Yudha asked mockingly: "Are there no more demonstrations for lowering of prices, little mother?" Mrs. Soebandrio had a few months ago taken busy part in the communist mass demonstrations against the high prices of foodstuffs. For her it was a stinging blow when she wanted to condole with Mrs. and General Nasoetion on the death of the five-year-old Irma Soerjani Nasoetion, who was shot dead by the rebels. Mrs. Nasoetion sent Mrs. Soebandrio out of her house with the accusation: "All this has come about because of you."
