=== [Page 1] === "17 August, a day of mourning". Embittered announcement of a formed Panitya [committee] "17 August 1950 is for the Indonesian people a day of mourning and at the same time a day on which it takes the oath of loyalty to the 'proclamation of the people of 17 August 1945'," is announced in the explanation of the formation of the Panitya Peringatan Proklamasi Rakjat 17 Agustus 1945 [Committee for the Commemoration of the People's Proclamation of 17 August 1945]. In connection with the fact that the government has included no representatives of the parties or organisations in the committee for the celebration of the commemoration day of the freedom proclamation, a number of organisations, among them SOBSI, the Rukun Tani Indonesia, the Front Nasional Pemuda — comprising 14 youth organisations —, PRRI [sic] and the women's organisation GERWIS, decided on Friday evening at a meeting to proceed to the formation of the "Panitya Peringatan Proklamasi Rakjat 17 Agustus 1945". The announcement further says that it is now clear to the people that the nationalist bourgeoisie, bribed by the imperialists, has tried to erase the original content and meaning of 17 August, for — thus the announcement — "on 17 August 1950 a unitary state à la RTC [Round Table Conference] will be proclaimed, whose content and foundations run counter to those of the Unitary Republic of Indonesia that was proclaimed by the people on 17 August 1945". And with the coming into being of the unitary state à la RTC the Negara Republik Indonesia proclaimed by the people on 17 August is buried. And therefore 17 August 1950 is for the Indonesian people a day of mourning, "and a day on which it at the same time takes the oath of loyalty to the proclamation of the people of 17 August 1945", the announcement concludes. Meanwhile the Panitya has lodged a protest with the Military Governor of Djakarta Raya against the ban on carrying banners in the procession of 17 August with inscriptions that express party or group demands or give offence or call on people to side with any power in the present international political situation, or slogans that are insulting to a particular party.
