=== [Page 1] === READERS' OPINIONS: Gebeo and Luna [Letter on street lighting — Gebeo is the electricity company — suggesting that it "marry" the moon, as the Sabang street-lighting fund did in 1905, by lighting lamps only when the moon is down; signed L. H. C. Horsting – not translated in detail] When I was stationed in 1905 as a lieutenant at Sabang, we had there a "Street Lighting Fund", to which all inhabitants of the place were obliged to contribute. From that fund the petroleum for the street lighting was paid. The more sparing the consumption, the lower the contribution. Therefore the Fund entered into a marriage with MADAME LUNA. Both complemented each other very practically and economically. The convict labourer charged with the street lighting lit the lanterns half an hour before the Moon disappeared below the horizon and put them out immediately after the Moon had risen. Why does the GEBEO in these days of need not also enter into a marriage with Madame Luna, the eternally Beautiful? Then some employees will have to go out for a while at night — just like our convict labourer —, but yes, they are there for the community, which is often forgotten by officials. I also notice that the street lighting is already on and not yet off when it is still day or already day. By regulating this more precisely the street lighting could be on about an hour less than is now the case. Since it is rightly demanded and expected of us consumers that we give our full co-operation so as to be able to save current as long and as much as possible, it seems to me equally logical that the GEBEO for its part also do everything to save the situation. Meanwhile let us hope that the "raindrops" will soon knock at our windows again. Then the Gebeo-LUNA marriage can be dissolved again. L. H. C. Horsting. [Other article: The chief of staff of the British empire, Field Marshal Sir William Slim, reported on Tuesday to the delegates of the Council of the North Atlantic Pact on his findings in Athens and Ankara – not translated] The central board of the Indonesian women's organisation GERWIS has issued a statement in which approval is expressed of, and support given to, the interpellation of Mr. Tan Po Goan concerning the security action. The GERWIS demands of the Government that the persons detained during the raids in August, insofar as they have not yet been released, be set free again.
