=== [Page 1] === Public meeting of the Masjumi. "Doctrines of the Koran must be the basis of our state". On the rights and duties of Muslims Despite the scorching heat of the sun there were yesterday thousands of men and women, for the most part armed with parasols, present at the sports field Babakan Tjiparay to attend an open-air meeting of the Masjumi, sub-branch Tegallega. Mrs. Ijom Suleiman spoke about the rights and duties of Muslim women and quoted in this connection many passages from the Koran and the Hadiths to make clear that according to Islam women have the same rights and duties as men. "Women were not created solely to charm men, but they too have the task of realising the doctrines of Islam on earth." The secretary-general of the Masjumi for West Java, Mr. M. Rusjad Nurdin, set out the aims of the Masjumi and said in this connection that although Indonesia has already been free for almost nine years, there are still many Indonesians, including government officials, who do not realise how they must behave as citizens of a free state. In free democratic Indonesia everyone has the right to proclaim his opinion, while it is everyone's duty to respect the opinion of others. It is, however, to be regretted, said the speaker, that these democratic rights are rather often abused, so that it frequently happens that insults are directed at Islam. The speaker appealed in this connection to the government to take strict measures against anyone who publicly insults Islam. "Peace be with you". "It cannot be denied that Muslims love peace. Five times a day they are namely obliged to pronounce the formula: Peace be with you. It would therefore not be reconcilable if Muslims did not tolerate the opinion of those who think differently," said Mr. Rusjad Nurdin. He added to this, however, that Muslims will react against whoever dares to insult Islam. In view of the fact that the P.K.I. has lately often claimed that the Masjumi members "are comprador agents of America", the speaker asked the question: "Who is actually the comprador of a foreign power? The Masjumi has never hung up portraits of Eisenhower or Truman at public meetings. But for the P.K.I. it is the custom to hang up portraits of Malenkov and Mao Tse-tung!" Mr. Rusjad Nurdin said that as a democrat he respects the opinion of the P.K.I., but that as a Muslim and at the same time a democrat he also has the right to make clear to everyone that the doctrine of communism is in essence not reconcilable with the doctrine of Islam. "As a Muslim I therefore have the duty to appeal to all Muslims never to join the P.K.I. or organisations influenced by the P.K.I., such as the Sobsi, the Gerwis, etc." General elections. The last speaker was Mr. R.Th. Djaja Rachmat, chairman of the Masjumi and chairman of the Provincial Council for West Java. He said among other things that Muslims have the duty to realise the doctrines of Islam, as contained in the Koran and the Hadiths, not only in part but in their entirety. These doctrines also include instructions in the political and economic field. The Masjumi aims at nothing other than having the doctrines of Islam realised in the Republic of Indonesia. The Masjumi therefore sees it as a duty to bring about that the Republic of Indonesia will be based on the doctrines of the Koran and the Hadiths. With regard to the coming general elections he said that Muslims in Indonesia have the duty to elect only those persons who actually wish to realise the doctrines of Islam.
