„Feodalisme atau feodalitet" (feodalisme of feodaliteit).

=== [Page 1] === As the public has been able to notice for some time in the windows of the bookshops, the long-awaited second volume of the "Ensiklopedia Indonesia," letters F–M, has appeared. In our commentary on the first volume – around the middle of last year – we gave all praise to the publisher W. Van Hoeve, which with this publication contributes no small part to the development of knowledge and culture of and for Indonesia. This second volume too, like its predecessor richly illustrated, is indeed a rare publication for these times. The publisher has apparently made grateful use of the reviews of the first volume to make the second volume appear more perfect. The preceding compendium of physics, chemistry and mathematics will prove a valuable aid to many a student. The short summary of the rules of first aid (E.H.B.O.) can be of use to every head of household, so that this encyclopaedia will be not only a guide but also a good house friend and adviser to the public. We can in general endorse the objectivity of this second volume. It seems advisable, however, in formulations concerning current political questions, to choose the terminology in such a way that one does not run ahead of history. It is something quite different to say whether an organisation was "involved" in a particular event or whether the organisation "carried out" the event (the so-called Madiun affair, for example). We must also say that the Chinese bearers of culture, in particular the modern writers of the Chinese People's Republic, are abundantly listed. Of many, however, only their name is given, without any particular work in which they excel. At the letter F we have a remark regarding "Feodalisme atau feodalitet" (feudalism or feudality). In our view feudality indicates the character, while feudalism denotes the system. Furthermore, the feudal system as it manifested itself in the Middle Ages is sufficiently explained, but on the other hand the encyclopaedia considers it sufficient to explain concerning Indonesia that there are still feudal traditions in this country, without connecting this in any way with a system that once existed. Another definition that brings more vagueness than clarity is the notion "folio," which in our opinion is too summary to give a layman a good understanding of it. As regards the parties and organisations mentioned in the encyclopaedia, we can fully understand the difficulty of the compilers in imposing a certain restriction on themselves without doing violence to objectivity. But with regard to the Masjumi party the compilers could certainly have been somewhat more detailed, given that it concerns one of the most influential realities in present-day Indonesian political life. Of the said party only the explanation of the abbreviation is given, whereas on the other hand the communist movement receives half a page. Both movements are about equally old and undoubtedly do not yield to each other in importance. It is, moreover, decidedly wrong to state that the I.E.V. was dissolved as an association after the transfer of sovereignty. Likewise to list the Gerakan Revolusi Rakjat or the Gerwis as communist organisations. To remain objective in this, we propose that the compiler consult the little work "Kepartaian di Indonesia" (The Party System in Indonesia) published by the Indonesian Ministry of Information. Information from the bodies concerned can likewise make an important contribution, for example in descriptions of army organisations such as the "Markas Besar ALRI" (Headquarters of the Indonesian Navy), of which it is stated that this organisation existed from 1947–1948. To date the said body still exists. To stay with the army for a moment, it seems to us not superfluous to add the abbreviations of the names mentioned. We would also gladly see included the mottos of at least the army, navy, air force and armed forces, with their corresponding meaning, such as "Kartika Eka Paksi" of the army. The choice of well-known figures still gives us in general the impression of following no fixed line. Thus we miss under the K the name Pangeran Kornel, a well-known figure from Indonesia's history. Nor do we find Sultan Hasanuddin of Makassar mentioned. We do see Aoh Kartahadimadja listed, but without doing this artist an injustice we would also gladly see Achdiat Kartamihardja included, and Hadji Hasanmustafa, the Indonesian philosopher. Since an encyclopaedia is a relatively permanent work, we wonder whether it would not be better to leave organisations such as the KPUI and KPUE (Office for Import and Office for Export) out of the entries. After all, such departments are uncertain of their existence under a constantly changing order. One more remark we wish to make concerns the text on the KMB (Indonesian abbreviation for Round Table Conference) and the text on the Afro-Asian Conference. Undoubtedly the text on the Afro-Asian Conference, especially because of its topicality, is very important and we would certainly not like to see it shortened. But by contrast we find only a few lines on the RTC agreement. Likewise under the subject: Indonesia. If we see what an important role this agreement plays precisely now in virtually every sector of Indonesian life, economic, political and cultural alike, we would actually have expected a text and explanation as extensive as that on the A-A conference. Finally, one more suggestion about the place names, where the geography enthusiast would gladly see a longitude and latitude for further orientation. The illustrations, as in the first volume, are still too detached from the text without any fixed line, which can lead only to a certain arbitrariness in the choice, but this is amply compensated by the wealth of illustrations. It is a pity that in the proofreading it was overlooked that the text belonging to the illustration next to p. 680 has been swapped with the text of the illustration belonging to p. 681. We do not wish to end our review without pointing out once more that, despite the shortcomings from which every human work ultimately suffers, this encyclopaedia possesses qualities that make it highly desirable. Those who leaf through this second volume will undoubtedly become buyers of the complete encyclopaedia. Truly a standard work which we can warmly recommend.
