The commander of R.I. 24 – TT-VII, Lieutenant-Colonel Worang, stated to PIA in Tondano that the chairman of the defence section in parliament, Lukas Kustario, who recently paid a visit to Menado, has not understood the situation in the Minahasa.
Lt-Col. Worang made this statement because his name was mentioned at the press conference that Lukas Kustario held in Djakarta.
According to Lt-Col. Worang, Lukas Kustario could not possibly have a correct picture of the situation in the Minahasa, since he stayed in Menado for only a few hours (from half past four in the afternoon until early the next morning), so that his statement must be based on information from a few persons.
During his recent visit to Menado, the Army Chief of Staff, Major-General Nasution, took over all questions concerning the armed forces for settlement. All measures taken on Lt-Col. Worang's initiative for the benefit of the army were legalised by the Chief of Staff, from whom permission was further obtained to continue the reconstruction work such as the building of army camps.
Now that the Army Chief of Staff has taken over the pending questions, Lt-Col. Worang considered himself not competent to go into details regarding Lukas Kustario's statement on army activities, which statement in general could not win his approval. This also concerned Kustario's opinion that a counter-revolutionary movement was said to exist in the Minahasa for the disruption of unity in the Indonesian government. Worang considered it the task of political leaders to react, if need be, to Lukas Kustario's statement, which puts the Minahasa in a wrong light. Finally he wondered whether the two other accompanying members of parliament, namely Mrs. Salawati and Masjur, would hold the same opinion.
Dr. Ratulangi: The newly appointed resident coordinator in North Sulawesi, Dr. Ratulangi, merely shrugged his shoulders as a comment on the report about alleged activities of federalists as reported by Lukas Kustario. Whether probable discontent in the daerah with the policy of the present unity in the government gives sustenance to voices for a federalist structure, Dr. Ratulangi did not consider impossible.
"The greatest opponents can become the fiercest supporters," said the resident coordinator in North Sulawesi.
