Dulles in Indonesië
(United Press-Reuter.)

Dulles in Indonesia
The American Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, who arrived on Monday by air from Colombo in Djakarta, after having attended the SEATO conference in Karachi and held talks with Premier Nehru in New Delhi, paid a one-hour visit to President Soekarno.
In a short statement Dulles said: "We have seen with satisfaction the work done by your country and the other new independent states in Asia to form stable governments, to develop your own democratic institutions and to maintain your independence." Mr. Dulles was sure that he would return to the U.S. with a better understanding of the successes achieved and of the problems awaiting a solution in Indonesia. About two dozen Indonesians who had posted themselves outside the fences of Kemajoran shouted "Doe Seato tè niet" [OCR: "Do Seato te niet" – "Abolish SEATO"] when Dulles went from the aircraft to the restaurant to meet the authorities. They resumed their shouting when Dulles left the restaurant to go to the American embassy building. One of the demonstrators, a young woman who belongs to the left-oriented women's organisation "Gerwani," threw a piece of paper at Dulles's car. She was detained by the police for questioning. Dulles paid no attention to the incident.
Dulles has invited Soekarno to pay a visit to the United States. Soekarno has accepted the invitation, but no decision has yet been taken on the date of the visit. Dulles paid a visit to President Soekarno at the Merdeka palace an hour after his arrival in Djakarta. High-ranking officials of the American Ministry of Foreign Affairs who accompany Minister Dulles on his short visit to Indonesia have informally offered Indonesia American economic assistance.
