DJAKARTA, 29 maart.

DJAKARTA, 29 March. Soekarno's first wife, Mrs. Fatmawati, who two years ago left the palace of the Indonesian president when he, to the great indignation of the Indonesian women's organisation, entered a second marriage with Mrs. Hartini, put the question on Friday in an open letter to the president, to Moh. Hatta and other leading figures whether it is not better to charge a woman with the formation of a new government. "As a mother of the people and as 'first lady' who used to live in the presidential palace, I am prepared to sacrifice myself in the interest of country and people," said Mrs. Fatmawati.
Smuggling costs Indonesia 300 billion annually
Mrs. Fatmawati Soekarno has lived since her husband's second marriage in Kebajoran, the satellite town of Djakarta. Officially she is not divorced from her husband, because according to the teaching of Islam a man may have more than one wife. In her open letter Mrs. Fatmawati proposes to the mothers of Indonesia to appoint a woman who is not affiliated with a political party as cabinet formateur. "The fathers are not pure," said the writer, referring to the corruption in her country. At the same time Soekarno too on Friday at a mass meeting in West Java condemned corruption in his country in the strongest terms. "It is doubtful whether the leaders who live in luxury and opulence and eat from golden plates and silver bowls come to their prosperity in an honest manner," said Soekarno. The extent of smuggling in Indonesia, the main source of corruption in the country, currently amounts to about 300 billion rupiahs per year. In connection with the vigorous action against corruption announced by General Nasution, forty political leaders of virtually all parties, among them also two police commissioners and two former ministers of finance, have so far been summoned for questioning by the military police in Bandung alone. The military police in Djakarta will probably soon follow the example of their colleagues in Bandung.
RAID
On Friday early morning the lower town of Djakarta, where most bank buildings are located, was sealed off by soldiers, who began to search all bank buildings for documents connected with foreign-exchange violations and with "foreign subversive activities." The soldiers also searched for weapons possibly hidden in the bank buildings. Visitors to the banks were allowed to enter the buildings but not to leave them until the investigation was finished. Whether anything of importance was found has not been announced.
"PLAYING WITH FIRE"
The difficulties around Soewirjo's attempts to form a cabinet are also becoming anything but simpler. The Masjumi leader Anshary warned on Friday that an attempt to keep this big powerful Muslim party out of the new government is equivalent to "playing with fire." "A cabinet without the Masjumi, which in the elections achieved an absolute majority in most outer regions, could in fact govern only Java," said Anshary. The Masjumi refuses, as is known, to sit with communists in a government. The communist leader Aidit said on Friday, however, that "the workers throughout the country" are prepared to go over at any moment to a general strike in order to achieve that the communists be admitted to the government.
