... in accordance with the spirit of our national revolution. The most important problem with which Indonesia sees itself confronted is the speedy solution of the Irian question. At present the negotiations on it are still going on. "During its existence the R.I.S. people's representation has met 19 times, of which 13 times in public. The meetings were attended in total by 553 members, so that the meetings were attended on average by 88 members, i.e. 74% of the total number of members. 21 emergency laws and 3 ordinary laws were dealt with. The people's representation further dealt with 4 motions and 1 interpellation."
Djakarta, 24 July (Aneta). – On Monday morning at 5 o'clock [sic; presumably 10.00?] Mr. Sartono opened the session of the R.I.S. people's representation with a review of the activities of the R.I.S. people's representation [since] the establishment [...]. "We now stand in the last phase of the [existence of the] R.I.S. people's representation, and it pleases me to note that the R.I.S. people's representation has done all it could to [remove] the colonial [remnants] in Indonesia and for that [has done] something [...] directed towards national consolidation [...]. Now the people's representation faces an important fact, namely the treatment of the provisional unitary constitution. I hope that the treatment of it will end successfully," Mr. Sartono concluded his opening speech and with that declared the session opened. After the people's representation had commemorated the death of the member Hadji Benjamin with a minute's silence, the chairman announced that the members of parliament Andi Lolo and Pitoy, who had recently been detained by the APRIS, have now been set free again.
The draft constitution
This afternoon at 12.00 the members of parliament received the draft constitution of unitary Indonesia with the accompanying explanation. Maruto Nitimihardjo (Partai Murba) declared that in principle the procedure for treating the constitution can be accepted, but that he regretted very much that the time to study the constitution is far too short. The people's representation must retain the right of amendment. T. St. Diapari (Kalimantan), Mrs. Moedigdio (Partai Sosialis) and Arudji Kartawinata (P.S.I.I.) expressed their opinion that parliament must retain the right of amendment. Free expression of opinion is after all guaranteed in Indonesia. Mohamad Daljono (S.T.I.I.) agreed with the procedure for treating the draft constitution. "It is actually nothing special. We know the provisional constitution of the R.I.S., the R.I. constitution and the R.T.C. results" (hilarity). Daljono proposed rotating the section chairmen periodically, in order to keep the democratic principles high.
