Astrawinata, landrechter in Bandung.

Cabinet Ali
[Aidit's speech, reported at a PKI mass meeting in Djakarta, first part missing/garbled]
"We do not have a good parliament; it was put together by Roem, Sultan Hamid and Hatta. It was not elected and so cannot come from the people and be for the people and by the people. The Sukiman cabinet was very bad. It is responsible for the fact that in the August raids tens of thousands of us were arrested. We do not like to be in prison any more than members of the Masjumi do. The Ali cabinet is still not good enough, but nevertheless not so very bad. We therefore chose the Ali cabinet in order to cooperate with it. We do not want to exchange this government for a Masjumi government. But we want a government in which the workers are represented, in which the Muslims sit next to the PKI. A government of the people, for the people and by the people.
The PKI loses. The PKI wins. And if we lose this time, we will examine our mistakes, and then, if need be, we will surely win in 45 years. In the election campaign propaganda cars will face propaganda cars of other parties, and we shall shout! One meeting may drown out the other, and the election boards will jostle each other. But do not throw dirt and stones, and do not stab each other with knives. If our opponents no longer fight us, we too will stop. For our slogan is: Strengthen unity, fight division."
Those present then repeated in chorus after Aidit the following slogan: "Belanda, angkat kaki; tuan tanah, angkat tangan" (Dutch, clear off; big landowners, hands off). The secretary-general of the PKI hoped that the inhabitants of Djakarta, the city where the proclamation was announced, would, with the elections in September, line up to vote for the PKI or other democratic parties. The meeting was dissolved amid loud shouts of "bebas, bebas" [free, free]. Before Aidit took the floor at the public meeting, the non-party PKI candidate for West Java, Mr. Astrawinata, land court judge in Bandung, spoke. Mr. Astrawinata said among other things that the Dutch in Indonesia are pursuing a bad policy. It is therefore necessary to seize and nationalise their economic resources that they have here. From the trial being conducted before the land court at Djakarta against Jungschlaeger and from the flight of Bouman it appears that the Dutch are closely connected with the actions of those who hold a pistol to Indonesia's chest.
Next spoke the non-party Gerwani member, Mrs. Oemi Sardjono [Umi Sardjono]. She said that she, as a non-party person, had [chosen] the PKI above other political parties because it was a choice of being for or against the people. And the PKI has always fought for the interests of the people.
At the meeting all PKI and non-party candidates for the coming [elections] were introduced to those present. After the end of the gathering the communists carried their banners and posters with the party symbol along with them and placed them along the banks of the Tjiliwung, which were decorated with little flags. In the evening the communist party, which was celebrating its anniversary, gave its members an arts evening in the Gedung Kesenian.
