TOMORROW IN DJOGJAKARTA: Last order [of Soekarno]
DJAKARTA – Indonesia is counting in the first place on its armed forces for the execution of President Soekarno's "last order". This was announced on Sunday in Djakarta by a high officer of the general staff, Major-General Sungkono. Soekarno's last order will be given on 19 December in Djakarta.
According to some observers, when Soekarno announces his orders on Tuesday concerning the acquisition of West New Guinea, he could issue an ultimatum to the Netherlands to leave this territory by a certain date. Dr. Soebandrio, Minister of Foreign Affairs, said in Djakarta: "Indonesia would have to undertake military action if the Netherlands tries to give independence to western New Guinea." Dr. Soebandrio spoke at the conference of the nationalist women's organisation, Gerwani. He said that the Dutch "separatist policy" was a real threat. "If the Dutch persist in the plan to grant independence to what they will call the state of Papua, I believe there is no other way for us than to look at the question from the military side. We are forced into a military confrontation." Dr. Soebandrio said: "The Dutch could not hear about our independence without resentment. We are always [ready] to forget bitter experiences from the past in order to find new meeting points." He said that with the issuing of a "command" by President Soekarno on 19 December "the bases for the measures that we will take against the Dutch will be completed".
