DJAKARTA (ANP/UPI/AFP). Alle eisen zij het verbod v>an de P.K.I. Waar is Soekarno?

=== [Page 1] === Despite appeal for moderation... DJAKARTA (ANP/UPI/AFP). In defiance of President Soekarno's appeal for moderation, the Indonesian army has begun a large-scale action across the whole archipelago against the communist party of millions, the P.K.I. The head of the army information service, Major-General Soebroto, promised the furious inhabitants of Djakarta who on Sunday [sic; Saturday per the text below] plundered and wrecked the house of communist leader Aidit that the "remnants of the Thirtieth of September Movement will be crushed". The army paper "Angkatan Bersendjata" wrote on Saturday: "How is it possible to keep a cool head toward enemies of the revolution, toward these immoral murderers? How is it possible to ask a patriotic nation at that very moment not to take revenge?" The answer was given that same day by a large crowd of Muslims, who plundered the house of communist leader Aidit, his close associate Njoto and the building of the communist women's organisation "Gerwani". From Aidit's house an amount of one million rupiah, a bloodstained shirt, a motorcycle and a television set were taken. 2000 arrests The number of arrests in and around Djakarta has risen in the past days to around 2000. In Central Java 86 arrests were made. How many communists have been taken prisoner in Sumatra, Borneo and Celebes is not known. It is known, however, that the army has occupied numerous P.K.I. buildings there and that throughout Indonesia all communist newspapers, the largest and most of them, have been banned. It took exactly a week before 44 political parties and mass organisations in Djakarta found each other in their struggle against the communists. All demand the banning of the P.K.I. The army has not made that demand, but is openly going after the communists. On Saturday too the soldiers did nothing against the Muslims who plundered "communist" buildings empty, for it was "a spontaneous popular manifestation", as a police inspector let it be known. Where is Soekarno? Strange is that Soekarno has not shown or let himself be heard from since Wednesday. Some rumours say that the president is awaiting events in Bogor; other reports say he has returned to his presidential palace in Djakarta.
