FIGHTING IN DJAKARTA
DJAKARTA (Rtr-ANP). Just after the swearing-in of 14 of the 18 new ministers of the Indonesian cabinet, hundreds of demonstrating students stormed the presidential palace in Djakarta. The guarding soldiers had to use their bayonets and fire warning shots to hold back the crowd. Several students, among them a girl, suffered bayonet stabs. Five kilometres further, two thousand students clashed with soldiers who wanted to prevent their march through the city. The students were driven back several times with armoured cars and bayonets.
"I know my business"
The president had the ministers brought by helicopter to his palace. There he declared that the students' action was "insane". "I warn you," he said to his ministers, "that you need not think that I can be pushed aside. I know my business. I know what I have to do. Do not think that I shall yield to any pressure whatever. I am the great leader of the revolution, the prime minister and the supreme commander of the armed forces." General Nasution and ten other dismissed ministers were not present at the ceremony. Looking grimly at a Western correspondent, Soekarno exclaimed: "I do not wish to be dictated to or pushed to and fro by others. I know my business." The demonstrating students the president called "madmen who do not understand the changes in the revolution". He said that the student federation "Kami" consisted of "counter-revolutionaries", and of those who called the new government a "Gestapu cabinet" he said that they were "talking through their necks". (Gestapu is the abbreviation for the communist movement that committed the failed coup last year.) Only fourteen new ministers were sworn in on Thursday. Four others had not appeared for unknown reasons.
"Crush Soebandrio"
When demonstrators passed the house of the first deputy prime minister Dr. Soebandrio, they clenched their fists and shouted "crush Soebandrio" and "your cabinet is a Gestapu cabinet". The clandestine radio "Voice of Free Indonesia" reported yesterday that the police in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra, have been ordered to hold themselves ready for possible disturbances following the dismissal of General Nasution from the Indonesian cabinet.
