=== [Page 1] === Communist crowd welcomes president President Soekarno and his party returned yesterday afternoon at 17.15 to Djakarta by air after a two-day visit to Malang and Blitar. By a large crowd consisting of supporters and sympathisers of the PKI and other communist organisations the president was forced to give a speech. In his speech the president said that on his journey, as on his return to Djakarta, he was received enthusiastically. The president said: "What I experience here now, I have experienced everywhere in recent days," President Soekarno said to the crowd standing before him. He described the trip he made to Surabaja, Malang and Blitar: "It was exactly like here. Especially since I gave Mr. Ali Sastroamidjojo the task of forming a cabinet that has sufficient support in parliament (call: 'Agreed!'), in agreement with the outcome of the elections (call: 'Right!'). The next day I was already flooded with piles and piles of letters, resolutions, petitions and telegrams (applause), a suitcase full. And especially after I had told Mr. Ali that I could not yet say whether I agree with this composition or not" (minutes-long cheering. Calls: "Do not, pak, do not accept! The PKI is no trifle! We are six, 16 million! Defend the people, pak!") The president described how on his journey he was constantly stormed by people who came to him with such requests as the people here now. "Praise be to God," said the president. "I will tell you why. It appears that the Indonesian people has a burning soul. The forming of a cabinet has the interest of the whole people. Ha, is our people perhaps indifferent, is our people cold of heart? No, people, for otherwise there would not be such piles of resolutions, petitions, letters, telegrams!" (Cheering, clapping, calls: "We have had enough of being oppressed" [...]) [garbled:] "...someone who came from Moscow (cheering), who has seen the whole world, told me: 'In the whole world there is no people that has such a burning soul as the Indonesian' (prolonged cheering of the people). I already said in Malang that statements have the same colour as the groups that make them. Greens make green statements, reds red ones, whites white ones, striped ones striped ones (call: 'Nobodies make nobody statements'), yes, indeed what is shouted there, nobodies make nobody statements." The president finally said: "People, I ask all of you this. Wait calmly for the development, follow the development, but keep that fire burning in your souls! Keep following the development. I am now going home, take a bath, and then I will get back to work. At seven o'clock — yes, see those journalists prick up their ears — I begin my work. Wait calmly. (Call: 'As long as it does not take too long. We will wait, but the PKI must be in the cabinet!'). There someone calls out that it must not take too long. Shall I tell you why I do not take a decision immediately? (Call: 'Yes, we want to hear that, pak!'). Well, I know the weight of my responsibility. And a cabinet is responsible for the welfare of the fatherland. Think about that. I shall therefore consider calmly. And you wait." After this the president got into his car and drove away. Long before the arrival of the president a large crowd had gathered on the square before the entrance of the airport and the restaurant. The communist members of the veterans' organisation Perbepsi, the communist women's organisation Gerwani and thousands of others killed the time by singing songs and shouting out the slogans they carried on their banners: "Long live the people's democracy", "Long live President Soekarno", "If the Masjumi comes into the cabinet, then the PKI must be in it too — the PKI out, then the Masjumi too", "We do not agree with the composition of the cabinet", "We want a cabinet that represents these three currents: nationalism, religion and Marxism". Resolution When the president appeared in the restaurant after arrival, a number of resolutions from the Politbiro of the PKI, from the workers of Djakarta and from the communist veterans concerning the composition of the new cabinet were handed to him. After the president had stepped onto the podium he first read the resolution standing before the microphone. After the president and his entourage had been driven away at 17.45 in the waiting cars, there was great bustle for all those who had come to meet him, who were carried off on overloaded trucks. (A report of the president's stay in Malang is found on page 2).
