=== [Page 1] === Criticism by Indonesian parliament of [government policy] The Indonesian parliament, which was addressed on Sunday by Sjahrir, yesterday continued the debates on government policy. The subject Linggadjati was however touched on by only few speakers. Sarkoro [sic; Sukarni?], a delegate of the Indonesian women's organisation, started from the standpoint that discussion with the Dutch is impossible, while Tabrani (P.N.I.) warned against the arming of the Dutch and declared that he could not understand the policy of the government in the present circumstances now that Dutch aggression stands so much in the foreground. The chairman of the P.N.I. Sarkoro [sic] declared that his party was not satisfied with the present cabinet and pleaded for the establishment of a coalition cabinet. The representative of Ambon launched an attack on the new state of East Indonesia. The representative of Bandjermasin expressed his disappointment that Sjahrir in his statement said practically nothing about the outer regions; he was of the opinion that 99% of the population in the outer regions is republican-oriented. Amid loud applause he declared that the Dutch had already tried five times to set up the state "Borneo"; but in vain. The communist delegates were of the opinion that the building of the state should not take place on the American example, but as in the Balkans, in particular on the example of the Yugoslav people's republic. Van Mook is the only one who counts "The only Dutch politician who counts with the Indonesians is Dr. van Mook," wrote a correspondent of the Australian paper "Telegraph" these days. If negotiations with them had been left to Dr. van Mook he would already at the end of 1945 or the beginning of 1946 have achieved an agreement, but Dr. van Mook's policy was then unacceptable to the Dutch government and he was twice disavowed on account of his attitude toward the Indonesians who asked for self-government. Twelve precious months were lost before the government in The Hague realised that Dr. van Mook was right and it was wrong." About the Indonesian leading figures the correspondent says that Soekarno is known in the republic as "the voice" and Sjahrir as "the mind". "The Dutch regard the former as a traitor, because he cooperated with the Japanese. The Dutch can, however, after the way they have treated him, hardly expect any loyalty from Soekarno. He is an opportunist and the Japanese held out independence for the Indonesians and power for Soekarno. He speculated on this and won. It was a very wise decision of Soekarno to appoint as prime minister a person like Sjahrir, who is an astute, balanced and sincere man and enjoys the high esteem of both Indonesians and Dutch." [Translator's note: the printed text names "Sarkoro" twice for different roles (a women's organisation delegate and PNI chairman); the OCR/original appears confused, and this is rendered as printed.]
