=== [Page 1] === Skewed conclusions from letters of Soekarno By Frank de Jong. AMSTERDAM, Wednesday. In a perhaps well-meant attempt to posthumously cleanse the late President Soekarno of Indonesia of the stain that he had knowledge of the abduction of six high Indonesian generals on 1 October 1965, one of his seven wives, the Japanese Kartika Sari Dewi [Ratna Sari Dewi; as printed "Kal na Sari Dewi"], has had a series of eight letters from that period published from Paris. In the NRC/Algemeen Handelsblad, in which the letters are printed, a series of conclusions that have neither rhyme nor reason is attached to them. On the basis of only a few lines from the letters, written in the period 2–9 October 1965, it is concluded that the role of the communists in the putsch is not confirmed by Soekarno's epistles. This while it has been established beyond dispute that several thousand members of the communist youth and women's movements Pemuda Rakjat and Gerwani took an active part in the abduction and slow torturing to death of the six members of the Indonesian army top.
