=== [Page 1] === IN INDONESIA a campaign is currently under way that is clearly intended to make a possible removal of Ir. Sukarno [Soekarno] as president easier. For now the new leaders who have come to the fore over the past year evidently consider it desirable that Sukarno remain as constitutional head of state, because they believe that in this way the risk of dangerous conflicts at home — and perhaps even a civil war — is best contained; but at the same time President Sukarno's standing is being diminished and he is increasingly vilified. His removal would then probably provoke less resistance. This course of events is being helped along by President Sukarno himself. When the People's Congress, the highest organ of state, met in June and July, it stripped Sukarno of his title "president for life", but for the time being it let him keep his title "great national leader". A later, elected body would have to decide on that title. And it is from that title that President Sukarno derives the right to keep interfering actively in all affairs of state, often going directly against the government. He has accepted the ban on the communist party under duress. So too the peace treaty with Malaysia, though not without considerable reservations. Indonesia's return to the United Nations still does not have Sukarno's consent. He shows as little interest as before in the sad economic state of his country, and he has even now, for the umpteenth time, come forward in public with a story of a plot by the American intelligence service, the CIA, against Indonesia. He told that story ten years ago as well. THE UNTOUCHABLE LEADER Sukarno is no more. In the Indonesian press and in the Indonesian parliament criticism of him is voiced openly, criticism sanctioned by the new regime. Prime Minister General Suharto [Soeharto] called this criticism "courageous and corrective in nature". A year ago such a thing would still have been unthinkable. Then Sukarno's words were still those of a prophet and his speeches at indoctrination courses had to be learned by heart. A fruitful field for attacking Sukarno is his private life. He made this easier himself with his autobiography, recorded by Cindy Adams and initially published in English, in which he openly goes into all kinds of private affairs. Last month an Indonesian translation of that little book also appeared, which turns out to be considerably abridged precisely in that respect. It is a censorship that backfires, because for the Indonesian press this is a reason to dwell with relish on precisely the omitted passages. Painful for Sukarno is that in the trial held in Jakarta [Djakarta] against the former governor of Bank Indonesia, the Indonesian state bank, Joesoef Moejia Dalam [Yusuf Muda Dalam], who by virtue of that office was also a minister, his name and those of his third and fourth wives were repeatedly mentioned. It emerged clearly that they too had been involved in corrupt practices. FROM THE GENERAL PUBLIC Sukarno always concealed that he had more than two wives: Fatmawati [Fatma Dati] and Hartini [Harsini]. But it has now become common knowledge that he also has a third wife, the Japanese Ratna Sari Dewi [Radna Dari Dell], and a fourth, Haryati [Harijadi]. A slap in the face for the Indonesian women's movement, which strives for monogamy. Thus in Indonesia people are trying in all kinds of ways to make clear that there is quite a bit to criticise in Sukarno's private life and above all in the way in which he handled state funds to realise private ambitions. The Islamic youth organisation Demuda Moedlinin [Translator's note: name garbled in OCR] has already demanded that a trial be held against President Sukarno for corruption. Other organisations have spoken out in the same spirit. Fierce criticism of Sukarno is openly voiced and it is said that he is in fact the one responsible for the misrule of the previous regime. It illustrates the changed atmosphere in Indonesia. Meanwhile the new Indonesian regime must continue to put things in order. That is above all a problem lying in the economic sphere. An agreement has in any case already been reached with the Netherlands. Consultations are now being held again in London, and soon — in a wider framework — in Tokyo. With the help of the international world Indonesia is solving its economic problems. As for Sukarno, that problem it is trying to solve itself.
