(From our correspondent) JAKARTA [Djakarta], 16 Nov. — According to the socialist opposition paper "Pedoman", the central committee of the Indonesian communist party has decided to take a seat in the government by occupying the agriculture portfolio. This post had remained open in the extensive cabinet reshuffle that recently took place. The central committee's decision was taken during meetings held from 8 to 10 November. The party members Ir. Sakirman and Mrs Moedigdo [Mudigdo], both sitting in parliament, were delegated by the committee to Prime Minister Ali to conduct talks.
The PKI's decision is based on the consideration that if the party continues to support the Ali government until the general elections, it should have a say in government policy. Although the agriculture portfolio, as being "second-rate", is coveted by none of the parties, it is of outstanding importance to the PKI. It will enable the PKI to carry out the agrarian programme and thereby gain closeness to the population, which in turn is a means to better election results. The PKI is however not prepared to make its demand to be included in the government unconditional, since this would probably have the consequence that the Muslim parties belonging to the governing coalition would withdraw. A cabinet crisis would then arise after all, which the PKI considers undesirable, since the Ali government leaves it a free hand. Nevertheless the 21 votes that the PKI together with the communist trade union SOBSI can muster will certainly give Prime Minister Ali something to think about regarding the PKI's demand. If he agrees to the inclusion of the communists in the government, the suspicion abroad about communist influences on the present Indonesian government can no longer be talked away.
