V.P.). Hiervoor is thans de regering Wilopo verantwoordelijk. Mej.

For the S.O.S. arrestees — Mass demonstrations on Sunday 7 September
At a press conference held this morning in the Press Room in this city, attended by several journalists, the committee for the victims of the August raids announced that it is in its intention to hold mass demonstrations on Sunday 7 September next, with the cooperation of all organisations affiliated with Sobsi and other organisations that feel [for it], in front of the residences of the Governor of East Java and of the commander of the Brawijaya [Brawidjaja] Division. The aim of these demonstrations is to give force to the committee's demand that all August arrestees throughout Indonesia be released speedily. During these demonstrations a resolution will be presented to the Governor and to the Division commander. The Surabaya [Surabaja] branch of Sobsi has already promised the committee its full cooperation. The committee takes full responsibility for these demonstrations on itself, it was announced at the press conference.
At the press conference an explanation was given by Miss Sulami, secretary of the committee, who formed part of the delegation that recently paid a visit to Jakarta [Djakarta] to obtain information from the government about the fate of the arrestees. To a question on the subject Prime Minister Wilopo answered the delegation that he could not name a date on which the prisoners will be released. The premier added that the problem of the arrestees now has the full attention of the government. Talks will be held with the Minister of Defence, within whose competence this question falls.
On the occasion of reports about a secret instruction for the release of the prisoners, the prime minister declared that there is only one instruction and that is the instruction that was read out in Parliament at the time. The delegation spoke with Prime Minister Wilopo on 19 August. The following day the delegation had a conversation with the Minister of Defence. He declared himself prepared to seek a solution for the arrestee problem. He further promised to hold talks with the agencies concerned. Miss Sulami stated at the press conference that there is something not right with the release of the arrestees. This, according to Miss Sulami, is a consequence of the bankrupt policy of the Sukiman-Wibisono government. (Presumably the Sukiman-Suwirjo government is meant, Ed. V.P.) For this the Wilopo government is now responsible. Miss Sulami considered it very likely that the promises the government has now given will turn out to be mere empty phrases. If that is so, the people's confidence in the government will be shaken. Miss Sulami further said she was of the opinion that the cause of all this must be sought in the R.T.C. [Round Table Conference] agreements, of which the Sukiman-Wibisono policy is a consequence. That policy is aimed at oppressing the people. In this connection the committee is of the opinion that the time has now come to bring about the release of the arrestees through the struggle of the entire people. For, so she said, the August raids were in essence nothing other than a general attack on the Indonesian people, which is consistently anti-imperialist. Asked, Miss Sulami also stated that the action is also being conducted in the interest of the 13 Chinese citizens who are held on the basis of the S.O.B. [state of war and siege] [Translator's note: "S.O.B."
The committee, it was further stated, is fully aware that the demonstrations that will take place on 7 September may have serious consequences. It could thus be the case that the masses can no longer be kept under control. Naturally everything possible will be done by the committee to let the demonstrations proceed peacefully. The demonstrators will gather at the Tambaksari [Taman Sjiwi?] square [Translator's note: place name garbled] for the demonstration. They will assemble there at nine o'clock in the morning. In Jakarta there are now 1,025 [OCR: "1103-. Ö2.5"] S.O.B. arrestees, among them 13 Chinese citizens [OCR garbled]. They are held in the camp [Unreadable] in the prison at Malang.
