THE second International Congress of the Democratic Women's Federation, which took place from 1 to 6 December in Budapest, was dominated by the struggle for peace.
That the Hungarian people saw this Congress as an exceptionally important event was already apparent at the opening, at which the government was present in full and both the president of the Hungarian Republic and the deputy president, Rákosi, delivered an opening word.
At the airport in Budapest and at the borders of the country the delegates and guests from the whole world were greeted with flags and flowers and from the border stations red cloths waved on which welcome slogans were written.
All Budapest stood in the sign of the International Women's Congress. The magnificent parliament building, whose rear façade borders the Danube, had been placed at the disposal of the Congress and the Hungarian Women's Movement, the M.N.D.S.Z., provided an unforgettable reception; during the Congress it offered excellent care to its domestic and foreign guests. Over 600 women from 54 countries discussed in these days how to fight for peace and how to put an end to the war preparations and war-mongering.
[Fragment:] ... rise from the ashes [OCR: "arend"]. Work on the reconstruction! Work to make life good and worthwhile for the whole people. This was in general the content of the speeches of these women. Speeches glowing with enthusiasm and full of perspective.
There is no middle way
There were peasant women from Romania, Poland, Czechoslovakia, from Hungary, all with the typical black headscarf. There were women from enterprises, among them a Polish textile worker who is chairwoman of the works council of a factory of 13,000 workers in Łódź. A board member of the Polish trade union centre and women mayors, French miners' wives and many intellectuals. Delegates from Leningrad and from Stalingrad with decorations on their chests, earned in the heroic struggle against the Nazis. There were also women in uniform, the uniform of the partisan army of General Markos. Straight from the resistance, straight from the partisan struggle in the mountains of Greece they had come. Four young Greek girls. The Congress gave them a veritable ovation! Another woman in uniform: a representative of the State of Israel. "Against Anglo-American imperialism", she cried out, "for a free Israel!" Spanish women were there! Young, charming, dark. From Franco's prison. One of them had just two years of prison behind her. She had not seen her seven-year-old child in two and a half years. It was taken by relatives to Morocco when she was seized. She had fled from prison directly across the French border. Now she was there. Women from Iran, from Vietnam, from Australia and China, from India: dark, intelligent faces.
The fact that all delegates called for struggle against imperialism in the interest of peace led a Swedish delegate to say that the Women's International Democratic Federation, for tactical considerations, should not so openly take sides for the democratic front, because part of the women would thereby be held back.
In masterly fashion Sweden was answered by the Soviet Union, through the mouth of Nina Popova.
Demonstration of 180,000 women
"Must we be tactical, must we be diplomatic on the question where women should stand? Did the war of 1940–1945 not teach us where our place must be? The Women's International Democratic Federation stands on the side of the democratic front in the world. The Women's International Democratic Federation will show the way to all progressive women and lead them in the struggle against world imperialism! The women's organisations in the fifty-four countries that are affiliated to the W.I.D.F. stand through this affiliation in a front of 80,000,000 women and form an enormous power in the struggle for peace and social justice in the world!
Representative of the peace power
Whoever does not stand on the side of the peace front, on the side of democracy, stands irrevocably in the camp of imperialism."
Proud and tall she stood there, that Nina Popova!
ON the evening of the first Congress day the Hungarian women showed the women of the world what they think about the war and the struggle for peace. On the largest square of Budapest one hundred and eighty thousand women demonstrated that evening in front of the parliament building. With indescribable enthusiasm they came from all the streets leading to the parliament square, with burning torches in their hands. They carried signs with slogans "For peace", "Against imperialism". They formed chanting choruses: "Long live the Soviet Union", "Long live our Rákosi" etc. The whole demonstration was a mighty expression of the enthusiasm of the population for People's Democracy and for the leaders of the Peace Front in the world.
Proud, because she could speak as representative of the country that is the leader of this peace front!
O, Nina Popova, you, the women from the great, flourishing, socialist Soviet land, certainly have reason to be proud! And how ashamed we, Dutch women, were each time Indonesia was mentioned!
Dutch women, reflect
No, there is no middle way! The Congress was characterised by the same mood. Striking was the great difference in the speeches of the women from the People's Democratic countries and from the Soviet Union on the one hand and the women from the Marshall countries and from the colonial territories on the other.
The Dutch women who are still members of the Labour Party [Partij van de Arbeid] do well to think about this. The speakers from the Marshall countries showed that the standard of living of the working population is systematically being pushed down. That for education, for hospitals, for child care, in short for all social provisions ever less is allotted in the state budgets, while in all these countries the war budgets form ever larger sums.
They did not want to line up on the side of the democratic, on the side of the peace forces in the world. Now they see very clearly where they stand! With Drees and with the whole rest of the reactionaries they stand in the middle of the camp of Imperialism!
In the openly imperialist war over Indonesia.
Most female members of the P.v.d.A. do not want this, that is certain!
The Swedish delegate at the International Women's Congress in Budapest did not want this either!
She did not want it, and no progressive woman wants to end up in the camp of bloody, rapacious imperialism.
Without exception all these representatives spoke about the curtailment of popular rights by American dollar domination in their countries. In particular the spokeswoman from France, Jeannette Vermeersch, was very concrete. Speaking about the struggle of the French miners she said: "Yes, the French women, by their action, have the privilege of having contributed their share to the struggle of the French people, which has succeeded in making the implementation of the Marshall Plan fail."
But there is no choice! The world is divided into two camps! The Women's International Democratic Federation has deliberately lined up on the side of democracy. The Women's International Democratic Federation fights and will fight still more strongly with the peace forces in the whole world, under the leadership of the Soviet Union, against American imperialism and for a lasting peace!
The second International Women's Congress announced this decision in a manifesto. — v. W.
The women from the Soviet Union showed in figures how they cooperated in building up their country, that the life of the Soviet people is getting better by the day and that a secure future awaits the youth in their country.
Also in the countries of the People's Democracies Poland, Romania, Czechoslovakia and Hungary women are actively cooperating in the recovery. Schools, hospitals, hundreds of crèches [Translator's note: text breaks off].
