Indonesia on Friday in the Security Council
70 million workers and 80 million women protest against colonial war
The secretariat of the World Federation of Trade Unions [Wereldvakverbond, W.F.T.U.] has in a statement published today in Paris once again expressed the "solidarity of the trade union movement in the whole world with the Indonesian people fighting for its national independence". "The W.F.T.U. demands that trade union freedoms in Indonesia be restored and that guarantees be given to the Indonesian workers in accordance with the spirit of the Charter of the United Nations," says the statement. The W.F.T.U. requests the Security Council to bring about immediately a peaceful solution to the Indonesian conflict. Copies of the statement were sent to the secretary-general of the UN and to the Security Council. Iraq has now also decided to forbid Dutch aircraft to land at Iraqi airfields.
80 million women protest
The Women's International Democratic Federation, which recently held its second world congress in Budapest, has also, in a telegram to the Dutch government on behalf of the 80 million affiliated women from 56 countries, protested against the colonial Christmas war. At the same time a letter was sent to the chairman of the Security Council, in which the Federation, also in the name of the affiliated Indonesian and Dutch women, protests with indignation against the crimes of the Dutch government. The Federation requests intervention by the Security Council to end the aggression. The secretary-general of the United Nations, Trygve Lie, has announced that the Security Council will meet on Friday in New York to discuss the Indonesian question. If not all members can be present, then it will meet on Monday. Indonesia forms the only item on the agenda. Meanwhile a meeting of the consular commission, consisting of the foreign consuls in Batavia, has taken place in Batavia. In a telegram to the Security Council this commission asked for clarifications with regard to the resolution of the Security Council. The Dutch ambassador in London, Jhr. Michiels van Verduynen, arrived at Tandjong Priok [Tanjung Priok] yesterday evening. The party executive of the old S.D.A.P. has protested to the prime minister against the military action in Indonesia. It was reported that Burma and Ceylon have also accepted Nehru's invitation to hold an Asian conference on Indonesia. The American State Department announced yesterday evening that the American member of the Committee of Three, Merle Cochran, has been recalled to the U.S. for consultation. The statement further declared that the Dutch military action has "abruptly interrupted" the efforts of the Committee of Three in the Indonesian conflict.
Minister Drees in Batavia
Minister Drees arrived in Batavia today. On arrival he declared that he had flown via Sharjah [Sjarsa], on the Persian Gulf, and Bangkok. To the question whether he would speak with Hatta and other Republican authorities, Minister Drees answered that he will in the first place hold talks with the "high representative of the Crown" and with members of the "provisional federal government", that is, with the puppet governments. On that will depend which contacts might possibly be made further, so said Minister Drees.
