Wij zien o.a.

318 delegates could not come
[Translator's note: report on the opening of the World Peace Congress in Paris, April 1949.]
The various members of the preparatory committee appear on the podium. Among others we see Louis Aragon, the grey Andersen Nexø, Prof. Bernal (England), then Guy de Boysson, of the World Federation of Democratic Youth, Mme Cotton, chairwoman of the Women's International Democratic Federation, Alexander Fadeyev, Guo Moruo [Goeo Mao Jo], representative of Free China, Pietro Nenni of Italy, Mr Pritt (England), Louis Saillant of the World Federation of Trade Unions. Prof. Joliot-Curie first of all greeted the delegations of Democratic China, of Republican Spain and Free Greece, Viet Nam and Indonesia. All this was accompanied by loud applause.
The truth travels without a visa
He regretted the refusal of the French government to grant visas to 380 delegates, but "the truth travels without a visa". Joliot-Curie then pointed to the growing international tension, to the wars raging in the various parts of the world and to the unparalleled war-mongering against the Soviet Union. Against this an offensive of peace is necessary and not only a resigned pacifism. This congress is the first at which all layers of the population are represented. In Wrocław the intellectuals came together, in Budapest it was the women. Now they are all there. Joliot-Curie said further: "The Marshall Plan aimed at the reconstruction of West Germany and a postponement of the economic crisis. This however forces them to prepare a new world catastrophe. America is afraid of an economic crisis. Especially also because the Soviet Union has already known more than thirty years of socialist construction without crisis. America is moreover very worried about the freedom movement in the Far East. But, said Joliot-Curie, I am firmly convinced that millions of Americans love peace." He spoke further about the disastrous consequences of war preparation for the standard of living of the peoples, about the pressure on national income and the decline of public health. One of the most terrible weapons is the atom bomb. It is not decisive in war preparations. What is decisive is the use of atomic energy in the service of the whole of humanity. There are enormous possibilities. One wagon of fuel will be sufficient to supply the whole of France with energy in abundance for a year. Joliot-Curie pointed further to the role of women in the struggle for peace. It is the women who suffer most under the horrors of war. They know above all how difficult it is to create and sustain life. "Put an end to war and make peace permanent. All forces must be exerted for the safeguarding of peace." The scholar was interrupted time and again by stormy applause. The Congress unanimously adopted a resolution in protest against the decision of the French government, under American pressure, to refuse entry to 380 delegates. These representatives of eleven countries are at the moment assembled in Prague, where they are kept informed by special couriers of the course of the congress. Finally a presidium was elected in which representatives of all countries have seats. The Dutch delegation had come by bus. It was a very tiring journey and the participants arrived at four o'clock in the morning. But an excellent mood prevailed; fighting songs were sung on the way. And now they sit listening attentively in the great congress hall...
