=== [Page 1] === Heavy battle in Sumatra — Troops of [General] Spoor land at Indrapura — Power station and [...] A battle that lasted ten hours has taken place in Sumatra. The battle began in the area of Sungaipenuh and Tjurup [Curup], where according to the Dutch army command the emergency government of Sumatra is said to be located. The troops landed at Indrapura, where in the course of the battle all public works were destroyed. When Spoor's troops advanced to Muaraaman [Muara Aman], they discovered that the important power station there as well as the gold mines had been put out of use. All this is announced by the Republican press bureau in London, and the attack stands in a very remarkable contrast to the demand of Dr. Van Royen that Hatta must order the guerrilla troops to cease fire. The said bureau learns the following further details: When the reports about the Dutch attack came in, all Republican units in the area were mobilised. The scorched-earth tactic was applied on an extensive scale. After all important objects in Indrapura had been destroyed, the Republican units withdrew from the town. From London it is further reported that at least 50% of the production capacity of the plantations in West Java has been destroyed. The Republican units completely control the road network here. In this report it is said: "The banditry, which was organised by the Dutch as an important part of their terror tactics, has largely been subdued." In a report by Aneta it is stated that recently in the centre of Solo a "not inconsiderable police post" was disarmed. "Later in the night there is quite a bit of shooting." How little the occupation troops have to say in this city may be seen from the fact that a curfew from 7 o'clock in the evening has been instituted. [Translator's note: the following, from the World Peace Congress in Paris, appears to be a separate item whose beginning is missing.] ... policy of the fascist Axis powers. But the English workers will not fight. The world's peace forces are enormously strong. The international solidarity and unity of all workers will be the only guarantee for peace!" Eugénie Cotton, chairwoman of the Women's International Democratic Federation: "I speak here in the name of more than 80 million women in the whole world. We must create practical possibilities to make a third world war impossible. And our ideal will triumph! The role of women in the resistance struggle of the last war was enormous." And Madame Cotton turned, moved, to the mother of the heroic Zoya, Mrs Kosmodemyanskaya, who had taken a seat in the front row on the podium. All those present rose from their seats and gave this stately woman a long ovation. At this moving moment Zoya's mother could no longer master her tears. And the great Joliot-Curie beside her also gave clearly visible evidence of his deep emotion. "Now millions of women are fighting in China and Greece, in Indonesia and Spain. Women in all countries show an ever-growing activity. We have the greatest contempt for the criminal means of modern war, of which the gas chambers of Auschwitz were only a preparation. Never will women lend their cooperation to a war. We must fight with all our strength against the use of medieval means of torture. Women: no son, no husband will go to war any more. Together we greet peace!" Madame Melpo Axioti, representative of democratic Greece: "The delegation of free Greece was refused en bloc by the French government. But democratic Greece is there all the same! The Greek people greet with enthusiasm this initiative for the struggle for peace. Long live democratic Greece!" From Tokyo a telegram of greetings was sent by the national peace congress with which 7 million Japanese have expressed their agreement. As is known, the American occupation authority has refused to issue visas for the delegation to the Paris congress. Telegrams and couriers are exchanged with Prague. Here the more than 300 delegates are assembled who received no permission from the French government to come to Paris. A workers' delegation from the nationalised aircraft factories at Argenteuil stepped onto the podium: "We have spoken out unanimously against the Atlantic Pact. Forward in the struggle for national independence, freedom and peace!" Lombardo Toledano, chairman of the South American trade unions: "Yankee imperialism wants to win the peoples for war. But with no atom bomb could it win a war. The peoples will take the decision into their own hands. Yankee imperialism will not reach its goal. The struggle against it, the struggle for peace, increases daily. A fundamental change is taking place in Latin America. The political awareness of the masses has developed enormously!" Dr. Albert Bereczky, bishop of the Calvinist church in Hungary: "I am grateful to be able to speak here. The Calvinist church in Hungary stands on the side of all who are for peace. But we are not for a passive pacifism; on the contrary, we are for a courageous struggle for peace. War is against God's will. I feel obliged to say and to repeat again and again that the Mindszenty case has nothing to do with the freedom of the church, with the freedom of thought. I declare openly and honestly that in the new Hungary man has found his true social value!" Abbé Plojhar from Czechoslovakia: "I have come here to declare in the name of the Union of Believers in Czechoslovakia that we shall not cease to fight and work for peace. We priests work constantly together with the people at the building of socialism, of freedom and of democracy. We shall never permit that reaction misuse the most sacred feelings for its imperialist and war aims. The iron curtain exists only for those who need the veil to reach their goal. For us there is no iron curtain and there is none for people who strive for the ideal of freedom and of the creative labour of head and hand!" (Enormous applause). The Right Reverend Metropolitan Nikolai of the Russian Orthodox church: "This congress shows how enormous the peace forces of the world are. The Russian Orthodox church blesses all sincere people for whom the fellow man is an equal, a brother. The church believes that truth will triumph. It blesses all who stand for peace!"
