Leve Indonesia!"

The arrests in Indonesia
PKI CALL TO FIGHT FASCISM
The Central Committee of the Partai Komunis Indonesia [Communist Party of Indonesia, PKI] has published an important statement in response to the arrest of many Indonesian citizens by the Sukiman government, which we reproduce below almost unabridged.
The statement begins by explaining that the American war policy meets with ever stronger resistance from the peoples and that in particular in the Asian countries, Persia [Iran], Morocco and other places, the anti-imperialist struggle is assuming an ever greater scale. Turning to developments in Indonesia itself, the statement says that the policy of America and the policy of the Indonesian government (the R.T.C. [Round Table Conference] policy) have created a violent economic chaos in Indonesia.
"They have made the prices of goods rise, made the value of workers' wages fall, brought about inflation and taken the peasants' land because it had to be used for the benefit of the enterprises of the imperialists. The R.T.C. policy has led the national enterprises into bankruptcy, because these could not hold out against foreign big capital, which is protected by the R.T.C. government.
The R.T.C. policy has increasingly come to aim at enslaving the Indonesian people and making soldiers of them in the service of imperialism. American policy in Indonesia is in conflict with the democratic fundamental rights of man, witness the SOB (State of War and Siege), the ban on strikes, the arbitrary house searches and arrests."
* * *
"The economic and political chaos", the statement continues, "caused by the R.T.C. agreement, have given rise on a large scale to corruption and black marketeering and have made it possible for armed robberies and murders to take place by gangs that consist of, and are connected with, remnants of the colonial troops. All this has given rise to an ever-growing and more active democratic and peace movement, which combats every attempt of the United States to draw Indonesia into a war. Unity among the workers is growing stronger and many of its actions have led to victories. The activity of the workers has stimulated and inspired other classes and groups of the population to unite and to take action. Through this stimulus and inspiration of the working class the national front, consisting of workers, peasants, youth, students, cultural workers, political parties, the peace movement and others, is growing ever stronger. Since the American and Indonesian governments are unable to overcome the chaos caused by their own policy and are unable to defend their policy along legal and constitutional paths against the demands of democracy and peace, imperialism and the Sukiman-Wibisono government are becoming aggressive. This government unscrupulously launches false accusations and proceeds to provocations in which espionage and terror organisations such as the NEFIS, the F.B.I., Scotland Yard and the Kuomintang also actively take part. People such as Campbell and Allner, both of the American F.B.I., are allowed to play their role as provocateurs freely. In addition the government lets people come from abroad who are known as enemies of the people, such as Schacht, Dewey, Casey, MacDonald and others."
* * *
The statement names as the culmination of this policy the arrests of, and house searches at, members and leaders of the P.K.I., P.S.I. [sic], Partai Murba, Partai Rakjat Indonesia, Partai Permai, Partai Demokrasi Rakjat, P.N.I., Partai Sosialis Indonesia, S.O.B.S.I. and the trade organisations, Pemuda Rakjat, Gerwis, Komite Pembela Perdamaian Dunia [Committee for the Defence of World Peace], B.T.I., R.T.I., Sakti, Chinese, journalists, leaders of the association of ex-combatants, invalids and others. It is pointed out that the arrests are directed against those who in any way conduct opposition to the government. "Generally the reasons the government has put forward for the arrests (the so-called 'coup' at Tandjong Priok etc.) are found naive and primitive and the accusations made in this connection against the P.K.I. highly implausible." The statement points out that on 16 August the government had a delegation of the P.K.I., which asked President Sukarno and the High Court of Justice for information about the arrests, arrested, and has not yet released it. The P.K.I. has thus, the Central Committee continues, made attempts in a legal manner to settle the question of the arrests and house searches. Protesting forcefully against the arrests, the Central Committee declares that "the actions of the Sukiman-Wibisono government are aimed solely at making the policy of the imperialists succeed faster, at making the state of war and siege continue, at obstructing democratic general elections, at realising the military agreements between Indonesia and America more quickly and at drawing up a budget as a result of which the people suffer and which is aimed at war and terror. The actions of the Sukiman-Wibisono-Suprapto clique are not at all based on the national interests and the interests of the people. Its actions lean towards fascism, towards cruelty and arbitrariness. Its deeds mean a violation of the Constitution, because they are not based on proven facts but purely on untruths. The actions of this clique mean a coup on the part of the government itself, an attempt to seize power itself, to remove the progressive and the more or less progressive elements and to make Indonesia a fascist state."
The PKI demands of the government that all persons who have been arrested, both the members of the PKI and those of other parties and people's organisations, be set free as soon as possible and that all arrests that lack any legal basis be stopped.
Finally the PKI calls on the entire people, all democrats and true patriots, to cooperate closely in combating the common danger that threatens Indonesia: the danger of fascism. "This danger threatens not only the Communist Party and the working class, but equally directly all democrats, all progressive-thinking people, all true patriots who stand outside the PKI and the working class." The statement points out that the arrested also include members and party leaders of the PNI and other parties, further persons belonging to national minority groups, journalists, military men, invalids and leaders of religious groups. The statement ends with the following words: "We have already once overcome Japanese fascism. Now history places on our shoulders the equally heavy task of turning back the fascist danger which is being forced upon us by American imperialism with the help of the Sukiman-Wibisono-Suprapto clique. This fascist danger too we can avert and overcome, if we – all democratic and patriotic forces – cooperate closely with each other, as we already did in the liberation from Japanese fascism. It is not yet too late to thwart the attempts to introduce the fascist system of government by the Sukiman-Wibisono-Suprapto clique. May all anti-fascist forces unite! Long live democracy! Long live Indonesia!"
