PSI members: Sjahrir's instruction, aid to capitalists
The splitting actions of Sjahrir's [Sutan Sjahrir] socialist party, about which we published some details a few days ago, have aroused deep indignation among Indonesian workers. Numerous members of the Partai Sosialis Indonesia [PSI] have protested publicly against the inferior and worker-hostile practices of their party leadership and refused to carry out the secret instruction to destroy democratic trade unions.
Two prominent figures of the P.S.I., namely Dhanafiah and Marlan, both of the Djember [Jember] district, have issued a written statement which says:
"As members of the P.S.I. we regard the instruction of the party leadership as very harmful to the struggle of the revolutionary working class. The instruction means in essence aid to the capitalists." It is clear from this that Sjahrir's attempt to sow division among the Indonesian working class has the effect of a boomerang. As already reported, the secret instruction came to light when P.S.I. members in Djember proceeded to found a splinter trade union, the "Perbupri", which aimed to undermine the plantation workers' union "Sarbupri", affiliated to SOBSI. The executive of the "Sarbupri" established in a manifesto distributed at once that Sjahrir's splitting action is the result of the congress of the Socialist International held some time ago in Brussels, where right-wing socialists of Vorrink's stamp decided to develop greater activity in Asia. The determination of the plantation workers in the Djember area to preserve unity was expressed in the slight success of the founding, announced with much fanfare, of the splitters' union.
So dismal was the result that one of the founders of the new organisation, named Darip, has already left the leaky ship and asked to be admitted again to the "Sarbupri". He stated that he had come to the realisation that the Sjahrir union only obstructs the struggle of the workers.
Abolition of the RTC agreement demanded
At the annual congress of the Indonesian women's organisation, GERWIS, held in Surabaja [Surabaya], the delegates unanimously approved a resolution demanding the abolition of the Round Table Agreement, as well as the return of New Guinea to Indonesia. [Translator's note: in the OCR the sentence runs "...the Ronde / Tafel-overeenkomst, alsmede..." and is split by an interpolated fragment; reassembled here.] For the same demands an estimated 5,000 persons demonstrated on the Merdeka square at Bandjermasin [Banjarmasin].
