MAANDAG.
Meeting in Faelledpark

The Third World Women's Congress
1700 delegates from over 80 countries gathered in Copenhagen
(Airmail from Copenhagen)
MONDAY. – Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, called by tourists the Paris of the North, has for some days been the meeting point of women from all parts of the world. From China, America, Australia, from the Soviet Union, England and India, from more than eighty countries the delegates have come to the Third World Women's Congress, which is being held here. The city has received the congress participants – 900 from abroad and 800 from Denmark itself – with particular hospitality. Those who arrived by train were warmly welcomed at the station. No less warm was the greeting of the delegates at Kastrup airport. Most of them had a journey of many thousands of kilometres behind them.
Meeting in Faelledpark
On Saturday evening, 24 hours after Mrs Eugénie Cotton, president of the Women's International Democratic Federation, had opened the world women's congress, the delegates went, in the company of thousands of citizens of the capital, to the Faelledpark in Osterbro in the north of the city. Most of the women wore beautiful blue silk neckerchiefs: gifts from the Chinese women to their sisters from other countries. In the Faelledpark, where the evening gave the trees and bushes a beautiful colour, the open-air meeting took place. Prominent figures from the international women's movement spoke here about the problems with which women see themselves faced throughout the world. They spoke about the social position of women, about their task with regard to their children and about their responsibility in the struggle for peace. The last especially moves the participants in the congress greatly. That was clear from the way in which a young Danish mother made known her longing for peace and friendship between the peoples. During one of the sessions of the congress this mother walked to the podium where the presidium – to which Mrs Van Staveren of The Hague belongs – was seated. In her arms she carried her baby, a child of barely six months. Mrs Cotton took the child from her, cherished it at her breast, after which the same was done by the Soviet delegate Mrs Popova, Mrs Li Tehchuan [Li Dequan], the minister of Health of the Chinese people's government, by the delegate of India, Mrs [Unreadable], and the other members of the presidium. Great emotion took hold of all the women in the hall, an emotion which then gave way to great enthusiasm when all the delegates, hand in hand, struck up a peace song.
Shoulder to shoulder
During the sessions of the congress members of the secretariat of the WIDF reported on the activities of the women's organisation. Numerous foreign delegates took the floor and discussed the situation in their own country. Among them was Mrs De Pater from the Netherlands. The congress listened with great attention to the speech of Mrs Li Tehchuan, who answered the question of how it has been possible for Chinese women to perform such great wonders. "That is," said Mrs Li, "because we have won our national independence by driving out the foreign invaders and destroying the forces of feudalism." Mrs Kutscharenko [Kucharenko] from the Soviet Union said among other things the following: "In the Soviet Union women are building a new life shoulder to shoulder with the men. The women in the Soviet Union, who are liberated from tsarism, are developing their great gifts and talents. They sympathise wholeheartedly with the women in the capitalist countries and are fully prepared to fight with them for a lasting peace throughout the world."
Moving moments
Many impressive moments occurred in the first days of the congress. They were the moments at which the delegations offered each other gifts as a token of their solidarity. It was the moment at which a woman from the Swedish port city of Gothenburg handed the presidium an album with 10,000 signatures that inhabitants of her city had placed in greeting to the congress. None of the delegates will be able to forget these moments, nor indeed the scene that took place when it became known that the delegates from Korea, Malaya and Vietnam had been denied entry to the country by the Danish authorities. Three young girls appeared in the hall where the congress was held. They carried the flags of the three countries. Solemnly they stepped forward, while everyone in the hall stood up and by prolonged applause paid tribute to those countless courageous women in the three countries who fight with exemplary strength for the peace and independence of their country.
On the day that we publish the accompanying letter from Copenhagen, the Third World Women's Congress is nearing its end. The 1700 delegates, among them women from the Netherlands and Indonesia, will return home, as will the 10 journalists from 35 different countries who made up the majority of the male visitors to the congress. Among them is our artist. During the congress he made sketches of a number of delegates. We print some drawings by his hand here.
