Versterken wij daarom in Nederland onze eigen strijd!

=== [Page 1] === TEN YEARS OF THE REPUBLIC In November 1952 – thus almost three years ago now – the well-known Indonesian sculptor and painter Hendra [Hendra Gunawan] gave one of his paintings to the Dutch trade union federation, the EVC. This painting was his indictment of the oppression of his brave people by Dutch colonialism. It shows the destruction of the kampong Batur on the Dieng Plateau by the violence of the second colonial war in 1948. Many kampong inhabitants were murdered in it. The razing of Batur and its population was neither the beginning nor the end of Indonesia's suffering under the colonial yoke. It is one dreadful event in an endless series of acts of violence by which the pepper, the tea, the tobacco, the cloves, the rubber, the coffee, the oil, the million-guilder profits from the "Thousand Islands" and their population are squeezed out. In that series falls the wiping out of Djakarta at the beginning of the 17th century, the death by starvation of unprecedented masses of Indonesians (in the area of Semarang alone, in the middle of the last century, 100,000 men and women died within 6 months. Their undernourished bodies lacked the strength to work the rich rice fields). In that series also stand the 50 gallows on which in 1869 at Bekassi [Bekasi] 50 Indonesians were hanged, the concentration camps of Boven-Digoel in the twenties and thirties of this century, and they were followed by the "police actions" of 1947 and 1948 and the wild terror of Westerling in Celebes. The ministers who sent this officer the weapons are still alive. The bereaved in Indonesia still mourn their dead. For more than three and a half centuries, up to the most recent day, blood has flowed in Indonesia so that colonial profits would keep flowing. On 8 April 1924 the SDAP delegate Van Kol predicted in the Senate that it would come to the point that every Indonesian would raise the slogan: "Rather alone to hell, than with the Netherlands to heaven". So terrible was the suffering of the population in one of the richest and most fertile countries in the world! Karl Marx wrote about this in "Capital": "The history of Dutch colonial management ... offers an unsurpassable picture of treachery, bribery, assassination and meanness." We recall all this because it is today ten years ago that the Indonesian people straightened their beaten back, grasped the weapon of revolution, shook Dutch colonialism to its foundations and with the founding of the Republik Indonesia put an end for ever to the Netherlands East Indies. The aims of this August revolution have not yet been achieved. Not even today. Its task, the driving out of all foreign exploitation, the destruction of feudal relations, it has not completed. But it did bring an enormous and unknown rise in the national and political consciousness of the Indonesian people, in all its sections, in the first place of the workers and peasants. It brought an Indonesia that began to play its role in world politics, that under the government of Ali Sastroamidjojo meant a strengthening of the peace camp in the world. In one of its cities, in Bandung, Indonesia received the representatives of 29 Asian and African countries, which together comprise 1,600 million people. This Bandung conference is the symbol of the unstoppable people's movement taking place in Asia and Africa, inspired as these masses of people are by the great example of the Soviet Union and the founding of the Chinese People's Republic. The conference of Bandung condemned colonialism, declared itself in favour of the peaceful coexistence of the different political systems and for relations on a footing of equality. The government of Ali Sastroamidjojo supported these decisions to the full. It further opened an embassy of the Republik in Moscow, it sent – against the will of America – a trade mission to Peking, it set about improving trade relations with the socialist part of the world, it curtailed the possibilities of transferring profits by Dutch enterprises, it made a start with combating the foreign-inspired terror gangs of the Darul Islam. In and after the Japanese period – that is during and directly after the Second World War – the Indonesian peasants took possession of the plantations of the Dutch and other foreign grandees and began to cultivate the land. In two military actions and at the conference table the Dutch government, with the support of America and England, has attempted to undo the gains of the national forces in Indonesia. During the Round Table Conference it dictated among other things: return of all plantations, factories, oil fields and mines to the former foreign owners. How it thereby committed treachery against the solemn, official promise made by Radio Oranje, the promise of equality and independence! Many [of these] the foreign enterprises took back by force and they leave nothing undone to get all their former possessions into their hands again. The Handelsvereniging Amsterdam (HVA) and the Deli Planters' Association went on after the "police actions" to destroy the land and little houses of the poor peasants with tractors. The Bataafse Petroleum Maatschappij demands back the self-spouting oil wells with high petrol content in North Sumatra. The Dutch entrepreneurs, whose offices are seated on the Keizersgracht and the Heerengracht or elsewhere in Amsterdam and our country, hunt for maximum profits. In [1954] the export surplus amounted to 2,070 million rupiah, as in the past there have always been, year in, year out, enormous export surpluses. These sums are withheld from Indonesia, sums that it needs so urgently for its own economic development. Around 500 million guilders profit a year the foreign capitalists – with the Dutch in front – drag out of Indonesia. And at the same time the Indonesians who work on the plantations, in the factories and in the ports suffer bitter poverty. The misery of the 15 million unemployed is unimaginable and indescribable. The nameplates on the offices of the foreign enterprises are more costly than the wretched huts in which the Indonesians live. At the same moment that the Dutch financial papers write about "the peak year of the Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland" and the "significantly increased profit of the Koninklijke Rotterdamse Lloyd", the 8,000 Indonesian dockworkers of the Dutch companies crowd in their Union kampong in Tandjong Priok around the single tap that has been laid on for them. At the same moment that scientists in Geneva speak of unprecedented possibilities that have come within reach of mankind, of conquering and holding the inexhaustible energy source of the sun, that same sun in Indonesia is a hell for countless people. Masses of people have no house, let alone a tap. In Djakarta they live in the street, in the trampled grass along the brown dirty kali, which serves them as washing place and w.c. The fruits of their labour serve not their own welfare, but the inflated luxury of the powerholders of the foreign concerns and trusts. It is these powerholders who try to halt the advance of the Indonesian freedom movement towards a new, a better, a happy, fully independent Indonesia, who try to keep their exploitation colony and want to prevent Indonesia from becoming a power source of the camp that has inscribed peace, non-aggression, cooperation, equality of all races and nations, progress on its banner. It is they who force governments not to keep their own promises to negotiate about New Guinea. They keep New Guinea under heavily armed rule as a military base in the Far East, as a springboard to the young republic. Against this background we must see the events taking place today – ten years after the revolution of 17 August 1945. The struggle between the national forces and the foreign big entrepreneurs, supported by domestic feudal lords and collaborators, is in full swing. Stormy is the development of the organisations of the workers, peasants and other national forces. The PKI – a few years ago still only a small party – now counts more than 500,000 members. SOBSI – founded 8 years ago – with its almost 3 million members is by far the largest and strongest trade union centre. There is the Indonesian Peasants' Union, BTI (280,000 members), the youth movement Pemuda Rakjat (450,000 members) and the strong women's movement, the Gerwani. It is these organisations which, with other national parties and groupings, exert themselves to strengthen the unity of all Indonesian forces against imperialism. The unity of workers and peasants, intellectuals and artists, of soldiers, officers and national entrepreneurs against the same enemy who oppresses them all and stifles life in Indonesia. Attempt after attempt is made by foreign capital to halt this advance of the national united front. There is the failed attempt in October 1952 to scatter parliament and establish a military dictatorship. The right-socialist party of Sjahrir (PSI) played an important role in this. There are the terror actions in Atjeh [Aceh], there is the prevention so far of the ratification of the abolition of the Netherlands-Indonesian Union, as a result of the boycott of parliament by the PSI and the Masjumi (a highly reactionary party in which the big landowners have the lead), there are the attempts to counteract the elections, which must be held on 29 September next, there is the activity of the Darul Islam gangs and there is finally the overthrow of the government of Ali Sastroamidjojo. This was overthrown at the instigation of the foreign big capitalists and by means of machinations of high army officers who come from the circles of the Masjumi and the PSI. The government of Ali Sastroamidjojo (without Masjumi and PSI) and supported by the PKI has been replaced by a government under the leadership of the Masjumi and the PSI (without the PNI). This situation is not without danger. Too clear are the connections of Masjumi and PSI leaders with the Dutch and American concerns. Too well known is the role they play against the national united front and against a healthy functioning of parliament. Too painful is the memory of the Madiun affair, in which 35,000 people, mostly functionaries of the labour movement, were murdered and which was followed by the second colonial war (seven years ago at Christmas next). Under these circumstances the PKI places itself at the head of the national movement for a broad coalition government in which all parties represented in parliament are included, for holding truly free and impartial general elections on the fixed dates, for the normalisation of relations between the government and the army, for the destruction of the Darul Islam, for a foreign policy on the basis of the decisions of the Bandung Conference and for the return of New Guinea to the Republic. The present Harahap government meets with resistance in very broad circles and is exposed to massive criticism by the population. There is no doubt that the democratic forces, which have already managed to achieve so many successes, now also have the confidence to be able to face the threatening dangers. The struggle of the PKI and all national forces in Indonesia is not only in the interest of the Republik, of the aims of the 17 August revolution, it is also in the interest of the Netherlands. Indonesia and the Netherlands have one common enemy: Dutch imperialism, which is subordinate to American imperialism. They and we have the same aims: the abolition of those Netherlands-Indonesian relations that are not based on a footing of equality and putting in their place relations that are founded on complete equality and mutual benefit. They and we want peace! Let us therefore strengthen our own struggle in the Netherlands! Let us strengthen our bonds of friendship with the Indonesian national movement! Let us make the 17 August commemoration meetings in our country a success; as a contribution to new, better relations with the Republik Indonesia, which will spare both our countries new colonial adventures, and which will benefit both the Netherlands and Indonesia in every respect!
