The national board of the Nederlandse Vrouwen Beweging received the following telegram from the Indonesian Women's Movement "Gerwani": "For peace and humanity, do not send your sons to West Irian!" The NVB has thereupon sent an extensive reply in which the assurance is given that everything will be done to unleash a great protest action against the colonial adventurist policy of the Dutch government. The letter of the NVB reads as follows:
[Heading:] NVB: We shall try to unleash a great protest action
"Dear Friends, We received your urgent appeal not to let our sons be sent to West Irian. In connection with this we report the following: As soon as we learned of the plans of the Dutch reaction to send troops to New Guinea, we turned to parliament with the request to vote against the government proposal and we addressed the following letter to the council of ministers: 'Excellencies, The national board of the Nederlandse Vrouwenbeweging, having taken note of the intention to send troops and war materiel to New Guinea in the near future, hereby expresses its great concern. It is of the opinion that what you call strengthening the defence of New Guinea can only lead to increased tension between the Netherlands and Indonesia, which implies an increase of the danger of war in the world. Concern about this lives very strongly among Dutch women. They namely remember the police actions against Indonesia which cost the lives of so many young Dutchmen and so many Indonesians. The national board of the Nederlandse Vrouwenbeweging therefore knows it speaks on behalf of many thousands and in particular on behalf of the mothers of the military men who would qualify for dispatch when it protests sharply against your intention and urgently requests you to abandon it. Moreover it wishes to use this opportunity to express its indignation at the fact that the people's representation was not [consulted?] in this matter of such weight for the whole Dutch people and moreover also dangerous.
The national board of the Nederlandse Vrouwenbeweging at the same time takes the liberty to point out to you that every attempt to strengthen colonial rule, throughout the world, now that colonialism is everywhere condemned most strongly, will arouse great indignation. The wheel of history cannot be turned back. It therefore once more urgently requests you to reconsider your intention to send troops and war materiel to New Guinea.'"
[Caption:] Thus the wounded of the second colonial war came back to their country in 1949. On stretchers they were carried ashore from the "Groote Beer". The dead remained behind in Indonesia.
