President Sukarno has withdrawn the four bills on the people's representative bodies. This after the protests that were first lodged against them by the PKI, SOBSI, the women's movement "Gerwani" and the youth organisation "Permuda Rakjat" [Pemuda Rakjat], and later also by other parties, such as the PNI.
According to the original drafts only one-third of the People's Congress, the parliament and the regional councils would be elected by the population. The remaining two-thirds would be appointed by the president.
Sukarno has now asked the Supreme Advisory Council to give a new advice. Between 16 and 18 May the council convenes.
On Friday the deputy chairman of the Council, Sartono, conferred on this question with two members of the advisory committee from the Council, among them PKI vice-chairman Njoto.
The struggle for the liberation of West Irian was also discussed.
