The national board of the Nederlandse Vrouwenbeweging today sent the following telegram to the ambassador of Indonesia in The Hague: The national board of the Nederlandse Vrouwenbeweging, shocked and indignant, protests emphatically against the arrest of Mr [Master of Law] Trees Sunito-Heyligers. Mr Sunito-Heyligers is known in the Netherlands as a defender from the first hour of Indonesian independence. Already in the years 1940–1945 she fought for restoration of law and democracy in the Netherlands against fascism. She defended before the military court numerous soldiers who refused to take part in the colonial war against the newly established Republic of Indonesia. By taking on the defence of the trade union leader Njono she has proved faithful to these ideals. Therefore the national board, also on behalf of the thousands of members and readers of our paper "Women for Peace and Reconstruction" [Vrouwen voor Vrede en Opbouw], demands the immediate release of Mr Trees Sunito-Heyligers and all other freedom fighters who are held prisoner by the present Generals' regime. The national board of the NVB.
