=== [Page 1] === The idea underlying the eighth of March has been propagated since the Second World War by the Dutch Women's Movement. It is also laid down in its aim: to urge women to defend their legal, economic and social rights; to achieve national and international cooperation between women; to exert all forces to prevent war and preparation for war. The NVB's actions have always been in line with this aim. This is also clearly expressed every year on and around 8 March with meetings, demonstrations, extra activities with the monthly magazine Vrouwen, and so on. These concerned disarmament, against the atom bomb, against the establishment of missile bases in the Netherlands, against the war in Korea and Vietnam, for international solidarity with the women's organisation Gerwani in Indonesia and the women fighting against the policy of apartheid in South Africa, and against the discrimination of women in their own country. The socialist women, organised in the women's organisation of the PvdA, now the Rooie Vrouwen [Red Women], have after the war, through the armaments and NATO policy of all post-war governments, completely abandoned the traditions of their great socialist predecessors, who together with Clara Zetkin marched against war. The Dutch Women's Movement, on the other hand, has continued that line uninterruptedly in all its activity. This happens to this day when it concerns above all the right to work and against the neutron bomb. In all the 32 years of its existence it has been the only women's organisation in the Netherlands that may rightly be called the organisation of International Women's Day.
