=== [Page 1] === From a reporter Minister Schoo for development cooperation, at the start of the 28th IGGI conference in Amsterdam, spoke positively about the economic developments in Indonesia. The minister, who, as expected, did not say a word about the executions carried out and threatened, called on the donor countries to continue support for the generals' regime. At length and in mild terms the minister went into the position of the women's movement in Indonesia. She praised the report that the World Bank recently issued on it. This can probably be understood as an indirect criticism of the Indonesian regime, without Schoo daring to put up for discussion the report's conclusion, which is devastating for Indonesia. The World Bank stated in its report that women at present more often experience disadvantages than benefits from development aid. The study — made precisely at the commission of the donor countries — states that the women's projects do not fundamentally affect the relationship between men and women. Minister Schoo herself declared after publication of the report that the results made her feel "rather melancholy". "In those projects women learn on the whole to do slightly better the same thing as what they traditionally already did", said Schoo. The minister refrained from voicing this criticism now also in front of the Indonesian delegation — of which the Indonesian minister for women's affairs is also a member. A spokeswoman of the Komitee Indonesië says in a reaction that she is "shocked" that Schoo in her speech passes over, for example, the ban on the women's organisation "Gerwani" and the fact that the existing women's organisations are in the hands of wives of high officials and thus operate completely toothlessly.
