Joop Morriën verbleef in 1954 acht I fanden in Indonesië.

=== [Page 1] === Joop Morriën spent eight months in Indonesia in 1954 to study the situation there and to meet people. He made a tour of Java, visited the artists' colony [name unreadable] in Jogyakarta, where he also got to know Hendra. There he took part in discussions among artists about whether the traditions, or old Javanese dances, had a revolutionary content or not. He spoke with trade-union people, with [women] of the Gerwani. There were plans to publish books from Dutch on a large scale in Indonesia. That was one of the reasons why Joop Morriën was in Indonesia. After the RTC agreement (1950) the PKI was on its way back and recovered from the blows of the Madiun provocation. But as late as 1951 party members were arrested again, there was an attempt to get the PKI banned again, which incidentally did not succeed. The CPN had old ties with the PKI, with Indonesia, which received new content after Indonesian independence. Morriën illustrates this with the following story. In 1958 the (international) magazine Peace and Socialism [Problems of Peace and Socialism] was founded in Prague. A discussion forum of communist parties. The founders, the larger parties, formed the editorial board; other parties were represented in the editorial council. Joop Morriën was sent to Prague for the CPN. The PKI was also invited to that council, when Aidit was in the Czechoslovak capital. The PKI agreed, but could not immediately supply anyone. It was communicated that Joop Morriën could be regarded as the representative of the PKI in the meantime. "That was an expression of our solidarity and connectedness. People were quite surprised at it. Between communist parties in former colonies and the colonising country such ties very often certainly did not exist. It was customary for a representative to give an introduction about his country and his party. I did that then about the PKI and Indonesia. It was also striking there in Prague, that relationship between CPN and PKI. After half a year or so the PKI man did come, by the way. I worked closely with him then."
