Text

=== [Page 1] === Dr. Wertheim, who addressed his listeners in Indonesian and Dutch, praised Hendra's painting because it shows a male and a female guerrilla fighter and radiates inspiration. In Indonesia there is still no real freedom, and he urged unity — "unity is needed" — to achieve it. He expressed the hope that the newly formed Foundation can contribute to tackling problems that have hardly been investigated. In that connection he mentioned the struggle and unity of Indonesian seamen and workers in Australian ports in 1945–46 against Dutch troop dispatches and the experiences of the political prisoners on the island of Buru and the defence of human rights. "The present regime in Indonesia is based on mass murders and falsification of the history of the left-wing movements. It is necessary to understand the basis of this regime and therefore one of the tasks is to describe the real history of the Gerwani (women's organisation), Lekra (artists' organisation), SOBSI (trade-union federation) and the PKI in general", said Wertheim. "That can feed the fighting spirit." Finally he said he felt like the prophet Moses, who saw the new land and dreamed of it although he knew he would no longer enter it. "Struggle is needed to achieve a truly free Indonesia." The recommendation committee for the Wertheim Foundation consists of: Dr. C. Baks, Dr. F. von Benda-Beckmann, Dr. J.C.
