=== [Page 1] === Today in De Waarheid Plus the story of Jan de Wit from the Zaanstreek. Well over forty years ago he was one of the soldiers who refused to be sent into the field against Indonesia, which was rising for its independence (on page 8). From the pen of Annie van Ommeren-Averink we publish (on page 9) an essay devoted to Kartini, the woman who played such an important role in the freedom struggle of her people. Both subjects also get attention elsewhere in the coming days. On Sunday evening at 18.05 the VPRO on radio 1 devotes the second episode of its series "Afscheid van Indië" [Farewell to the Indies] to the "Service refusers". "Despite the growing support for the refusers they all come before the military high court", says the VPRO's preview. "And whoever is not recognised as a conscientious objector must serve his sentence among the German war criminals." On Thursday evening 21 April there is in the Amsterdam Tropenmuseum a "Kartini evening", organised by the Stichting Indonesische media and the Stichting Informatie Indonesië. One of the speakers, Prof. Wertheim, will go into the book "De Pionier" [The Pioneer] by Pramudya Ananta Tur, which is presented that evening, and into the life of Kartini. Francisca Fanggidaej discusses the position of the Indonesian woman. The meeting begins at 19.00. [Signed] De Waarheid / Bert Zijlma
