[Beginning garbled] ... of "Schoonhoven boys", and later also Piet van Staveren, were defended by Trees [Sunito]. She was in 1946 the first chairwoman of the Dutch Women's Movement (NVB). Her husband, chairman of the Perhimpunan Indonesia, had played an important role during the war in the resistance against the Nazis and was, on the proposal of the underground, included in the National Advisory Commission. In a doctoral thesis by Jan Maarten Fiedeldij Dop and Yvonne Simons on the backgrounds and motives of Indonesia refusers, attention is also paid to the defence by Trees Soenito-Heyligers. She mostly linked the motives of the refusers with the Indonesian independence struggle: she had much respect for the sacrifice that these boys made and also made that clear in her pleas before the court martial. In the months November 1949 through February 1950, as long as troops were still being shipped, high sentences were still pronounced. At that time various deserters came to her who wanted to testify to their political conviction. She gave them the warning that this precluded a reduction of sentence. If her clients were willing to bear that, she cooperated. In the defence the most important arguments were that her clients did not wish to fight against a fraternal people and that they were of the opinion that it concerned a just struggle of the Indonesian people. She put forward that these boys contributed more to a good understanding with the Indonesian people than the two failed military actions, and regretted that such people, who defended a pure and lofty principle, were placed outside the normal." To the accusation that with their desertion her clients delayed the relief, she replied "that it is not these boys who are responsible for the fact that there are soldiers in Indonesia, but the government". To the accusation that these boys presumed to form a judgement on Indonesia policy she posed the counter-question: "If one has to put one's life at stake for a cause, may one then not judge?"
