DUTCH SECOND CHAMBER MEMBER OFFERS NEW GUINEA
President Soekarno on Saturday morning received at the palace the participants in a congress that the Gewani [Gerwani], a women's organisation that is a continuation of the communist Gerwis, is holding in Djakarta. The communist Dutch Second Chamber member, Mrs. Rie Lips-Odinot, at this reception expressed to the president the sympathy of "the peace-loving part of the Dutch people, which fully supports the national struggle of the Indonesian people."
She expressed the hope that good cooperation and understanding between the Netherlands and Indonesia would arise and continue to exist.
Soekarno said in his reply that a good understanding between the Netherlands and Indonesia is only possible if all political and psychological barriers between the two countries were removed. One of the greatest political barriers, the Indonesian head of state said, was the New Guinea question.
"You speak of the ever-increasing peace-loving part of the Dutch people that rallies behind the Indonesian national struggle. I hope that this part will keep growing and will make the political line of the Netherlands such that full understanding arises in the Netherlands that as long as New Guinea is not returned to Indonesia, no good understanding between the Netherlands and Indonesia is possible."
Mrs. Lips replied to this that the "peace-loving" part of the Netherlands fully justifies and supports the claim of Indonesia to New Guinea.
