Dr. Soebandrio, the Indonesian minister of foreign affairs, said in Djakarta that if good relations between Indonesia and the Chinese People's Republic are to be preserved, the existence of mutual respect is necessary. The Chinese ambassador, Yao Tsjoeng Ming, protested to Soebandrio against the demonstrations on Thursday in the Indonesian capital of more than a thousand Indonesian students in front of the Chinese embassy. That same day the Chinese ministry of foreign affairs handed over the sharpest note so far that China has addressed to Indonesia. In it immediate and public apologies are demanded and return of the nameplate and the coat of arms that were torn from the fence. According to Dr. Soebandrio, neither Indonesia nor China must interfere in each other's internal affairs. The Indonesian minister finds that the broadcasts of Radio Peking are almost a direct campaign against Indonesia. At the demonstration on Thursday China was accused of colonialism and imperialism. Another slogan branded the leaders of the Indonesian Nationalist Party (P.N.I.) as friends of China.
An Indonesian communist, held responsible for the torturing to death of one of the six Indonesian army generals who were murdered in October, was shot dead during an escape attempt. The communist, Soeradijo, tortured General Parman with a bamboo spear before killing him. This happened before the eyes of a group of screaming women and girls of the communist "Gerwani" movement.
The Indonesian minister for domestic trade, Brigadier General Achmad Joesoef, held talks with the Japanese ambassador, Sjisoeko Saito, on the normalisation of Japanese-Indonesian trade relations. A few weeks ago the Japanese government withdrew its credit guarantees for the export of a number of products to Indonesia, pending payment by Indonesia of outstanding debts. This measure had the consequence that the export of, for example, heavy machinery to Indonesia, urgently needed for industrialisation, came to a standstill.
