In the presence of approximately 200 delegates and observers of women's organisations from all over Indonesia, the 5th Women's Congress was opened on Friday morning in "Garden Hall" in Djakarta.
In her opening speech Mrs. Poedjoboentoro gave an account of the history and policy of the women's organisations that were united in the KOWANI during the period of struggle. The firm will of the Indonesian woman is now no longer directed at the struggle for independence, but at spiritual construction. In this, however, one must not forget that the freedom struggle has not yet ended. As long as Irian has not returned to the Republik Indonesia, the struggle has not been fought and we must support the government in all fields", said Mrs. Poedjoboentoro.
At the congress, which lasts until 28 November, preliminary advice papers are given by Miss Soesilowati on the general elections and the struggle of women in parliament, and on the reorganisation of the league of women's associations throughout Indonesia by the executive board of PERWARI. On the second day of the congress Mr. Nani Suwondo will give a preliminary advice on the marriage question, Miss Suwarti on labour and on the KOWANI in international context, while Mr. Maria Ulfah Santoso will give a discussion of the structure of the League of Indonesian Women's Associations.
On the last day an exhibition and a talk will be held under the leadership of Mrs. Kartowijono on combating illiteracy.
At the invitation of the KOWANI, delegates of women's organisations from Peking, who are currently on their way, will attend the congress.
