If at the time Minister Leimena made contact with the gangs of the R.M.S. and Mrs. Salawati Daoed [Salawati Daud] began negotiations with the gangs of Kahar Muzakkar, why must I now be punished, although I acted with the approval of the central government? thus Affandi Ridhwan.
As at the previous sessions public interest was great. Among those present were some military authorities, among them Major Roesli, commander of the CPM in West Java.
After the defendant's plea Mr. Kasman Singodimedjo read out a plea of nineteen folio pages, whereupon the other defence counsel Mr. Tan Sik Tjung indicated that he too would deliver a plea (of more than ten pages). Chairman Harsojo Muktisangkojo considered it better, however, to adjourn the session to 1 June, on which Mr. Tan Sik Tjong will be given the opportunity to deliver his plea. The public prosecutor will then possibly give a reply to the pleas.
In his plea Mr. Affandi Ridwan laid emphasis mainly on the political side of his actions. He quoted some Koran verses, whereupon he declared that, as a Muslim, he had acted in the right way, which action moreover is "entirely in agreement with the image of the present government".
"I have visited many dessas in West Java and everywhere I spoke with the ordinary dessa man. I noticed that the common people wish for nothing other than security, because security is the only condition for construction. I have come to the conviction that violence is not the right way to restore security. In my conviction there was still room for negotiations with the gangs. I put forward this opinion to the central government, which then gave me permission to negotiate with the gangs."
