=== [Page 1] === On Saturday morning President and Mrs. Soekarno received the members of the GERWANI (the former GERWIS), who had just concluded the five-day congress in Djakarta. At their request the president addressed a few words to the ladies. The president declared that he had great interest in the ever-increasing development of the Indonesian women's movement. He declared that the aspiration to achieve a just and prosperous state could not be realised by one sex alone, whether male or female, and expressed the hope that Indonesian men and women would cooperate together to achieve the stated ideal. The women's problem is not solved by obtaining equal rights with men alone. The ultimate solution can be found in the prosperous and just state that we have in view. A state in which men and women will work together for their country and their ideals. It is therefore a very first requirement to strive first to achieve this state, said the president. IRIAN Mrs. Rie Lips-Odinot, member of parliament for the Dutch communist party and board member of the Dutch Women's Movement, who attended the congress of the GERWIS, expressed to the president the sympathy of the peace-loving part of the Dutch people, which fully supports the national struggle of the Indonesian people, said Mrs. Lips. She expressed the hope that good cooperation and understanding between Indonesia and the Netherlands would arise and continue to exist. President Soekarno replied that a good understanding between Indonesia and the Netherlands would only be possible if all political and psychological barriers between the two countries were cleared away. One of the greatest political barriers standing between the two countries is the question of West Irian. "You spoke of the ever-increasing peace-loving part of the Dutch people that rallies behind the Indonesian national struggle. I hope that this part will keep growing and will direct the Dutch political line such that full understanding arises in the Netherlands that as long as West Irian has not been returned to Indonesia, no good understanding between the Netherlands and Indonesia is possible." Mrs. Lips-Odinot declared in response that the peace-loving part of the Netherlands fully justified and supported the Indonesian claim to West Irian, and ended by declaring that this part was indeed growing steadily and cherished the wish that West Irian would soon be returned to Indonesia since it saw that this question posed a great danger to the maintenance of peace.
