=== [Page 1] === "NEGOTIATIONS MUST BE HELD ON NEW GUINEA" (From one of our reporters) AMSTERDAM, Friday. — Under the chairmanship of Prof. Wertheim, a well-attended commemoration evening was held last night in Bellevue in Amsterdam on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Indonesian republic. The committee that organised this commemoration consisted of Prof. Wertheim, Prof. Romein, S. Slamet, Prof. C. Berg, Ch. Caropeboka, Dr E. de Jong-Keesing, J. de la Court, Ir S. Rutgers and Jhr G. van Suchtelen. The speakers were Prof. Wertheim, Prof. Berg, Prof. Romein, the Rev. Fijn van Draat, the communist Senate member Geugjes and Indonesia's chargé d'affaires in the Netherlands, His Excellency Sjarif. Five principles were generally accepted by the committee as the basis for the relationship between the Netherlands and Indonesia, said Prof. Wertheim in his opening address. 1. Full agreement with the results of the Asian-African Conference of Bandung. 2. Economic relations between the Netherlands and Indonesia can be of benefit to both countries. 3. The Netherlands must negotiate with Indonesia over New Guinea. 4. Cultural relations between the two countries can be of the greatest value, but only if they are based on complete equivalence and equality of the two parties. 5. All support and cooperation in the Netherlands for subversive organisations and plans against Indonesia must come to an end. IN THE HEART OF THE AMSTERDAM JORDAAN, where the houses stand close together and the heat lingers in the narrow alleys, it is not easy to find cooling. And walking completely undressed over low walls is not allowed. But when you are as young as this young lady and the heat is so scorching, anything goes. Only: why is the little one crying? Because it is so warm, or because she somehow does not find it entirely decent? IN THE SOUTH IT IS LESS SULTRY and there at least you still have trees, parks and playgrounds. And there is also the Van Heutsz Monument with its fountains, and there are bridge parapets of hard, cool stone on which you can lie full length, dressed only in swimming trunks of minimal size. Is it allowed? Well, so much is not allowed, and truly, at these temperatures the police turn a blind eye. AND THE SCHOOLS HAVE STARTED AGAIN... Poor teachers, poor pupils. May you actually take off your jacket, your shirt and your undershirt and sit in class like that? This photo was [Unreadable] AMSTERDAM HAS MANY PARKS, but they are not very large, especially not on warm days. Still, if you are content with a few square metres of grass, you can rest wonderfully there. ZANDVOORT IS VERY FAR, even for Amsterdammers, and moreover it is terribly crowded there. And actually in Amsterdam you may only swim in the swimming pools and not in open water. But well, just try forbidding it to the boys and girls who do it anyway. And praise this mother, who has also dared to take the risk
