DJAKARTA.

DJAKARTA. – Indonesia would have to undertake military action if the Netherlands tries to give independence to Western New Guinea, according to the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr Soebandrio, at the conference of the nationalist women's organisation, Gerwani. "If the Dutch persist in the plan to grant 'independence' to what they will call the state of Papua, I believe there is no other way for us than to view the matter from the military side, there in West Irian. We are forced into a military confrontation. We are for peace, but for the sake of the integrity and security of our state we must be prepared to make sacrifices for it." He said that with the issuing of a "command" by President Soekarno on 19 December in Djogjakarta "the bases for the measures that we shall take against the Dutch will be completed."
