The rupiah is falling, and the gold price in Indonesia is rising so fast that hardly any newspaper still quotes it. They have stopped because the price changes so quickly that publications always lagged behind the quotations. On the black market quotation the rupiah is worth only a tenth of what it was worth two years ago, immediately after the peak of the anti-Dutch campaign. Purchasing power has likewise fallen to a tenth of two years ago. The prices of imported goods have been shooting up in recent weeks. An American shirt costs 2030 rupiah, a kind of perfume much used by Indonesian women costs 1800 rupiah per bottle.
Worse still are the complaints about the scarcity and expense of necessary basic goods. Kerosene is hard to get. The newspapers write that many children in Djakarta do not go to school because they have to stand in long queues for their parents to obtain kerosene, which is used for cooking.
Chinese snap up as much as possible
The Chinese, many of whom, driven from the countryside, are leaving for China, try to convert their rupiah, which are worthless abroad, into goods. The Ministry of Justice has warned that restrictions will be placed on what they may export. Cars, a sought-after investment, they can no longer take with them to China. But bicycles, watches and fountain pens are bought en masse by them; those who have cars, motorcycles or bicycles try to exchange these for watches. The government will try to do everything to prevent the Chinese from leaving Indonesia with their investments. But if there is one category that knows what means always helps to pass customs undisturbed, it is that of the Chinese.
Fierce criticism
The devaluation of the money is attributed by Indonesian economists to the buying frenzy that occurs every year in the weeks before Chinese and Muslim New Year, but that is not the real cause. The newspapers, however muzzled, write that discontent has never been so great since the time Indonesia became independent. Even loyal supporters of President Soekarno have joined those who condemn his policy.
The leftist paper Berita Indonesia, which is pro-Soekarno, speaks of a reckless policy. Permoeda [Pemuda], also pro-Soekarno, fears that the price rise means the ruin of many people. Soeloeh Indonesia writes that prices now exceed the purchasing power of the population. Production is falling alarmingly. Factories are weighed down by a lack of raw materials and parts to be imported. The rich plantations taken over from the Dutch produce much less than before. Indonesia has always been the largest rubber producer, but this year it is overtaken by Malaya. Few new plantings have been made in the rubber cultivation that brings in about half of foreign income not obtained from oil. Most rubber trees — seventy per cent — are more than thirty years old and have been subject to exploitative tapping for years. Hence production, in 1938 608,010 tons, fell in '58 to 243,913 tons. These figures are from the West Javanese agricultural service.
How much longer?
People in Djakarta ask how much longer this situation can continue, whether there is no power that can halt this decline. On this there is general agreement: this state of price rises and frightening uncertainty cries out for a solution, whatever it may be.
