Dutch measures as a diversionary manoeuvre
Today President Soekarno is home again from his latest world trip: a house that he will, as usual, find in confusion. The reception at Kemajoran airport was entirely dominated by the anti-Dutch campaign. Two of the officially approved slogans read: "Indonesian youth is not afraid to withstand the Dutch challenge.... Indonesian women condemn the Dutch provocation". Most observers in Djakarta see in this a cheap diversionary manoeuvre. For the worst threat to Soekarno at the moment is the Democratic League, in which the resistance of Muslim, Christian, socialist and other parties to Soekarno's guided democracy has crystallised.
Democratic League growing fast
During the two months in which Soekarno visited twelve countries with a chartered aircraft of Pan American Airlines at the rate of 250,000 dollars, the league has spread rapidly. According to its leadership there are now sixty branches throughout the country and it even counts on being able to defeat the communists in the improbable event of elections. The league began to take shape at the beginning of this year after Soekarno dissolved the old parliament. It labelled the plan for guided democracy undemocratic and unconstitutional and a further favouring of the communists. After Soekarno had left — amid indications that he intends, after his return, to bring communists into the cabinet — the league spread quickly. With his dictatorial powers Soekarno can ban the league. Some think he will do so. Others are of the opinion that, in view of the league's large following, he will use his undoubtedly great mastery of sowing discord to undermine the league.
Indonesia hands over protest note
Harsono, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Djakarta, said yesterday that the Indonesian diplomatic mission in The Hague has handed over a protest against the sending of the aircraft carrier Karel Doorman to New Guinea. He called the latter a hostile act against the Indonesian government. He described the measure as provocative, aggressive and incompatible with the Indonesian policy of bringing the New Guinea problem to a solution by peaceful means. Foreign Affairs informs us that the temporary chargé d'affaires of Indonesia handed this protest note over at the ministry yesterday afternoon. The note is being studied. As a provisional reaction a spokesman of the ministry remarked that the Netherlands government cannot accept the characterisation of the Dutch measures as acts of a hostile nature towards Indonesia.
Indonesian jet fighters near New Guinea
It is reported from Djakarta that on Wednesday at a meeting of the chief of staff of the air force, Marshal Soeryadarma, and other regional commanders, the establishment of permanent jet fighter units on the islands opposite Western New Guinea was discussed, and further organisational and operational questions of the air force, to be ready round the clock in preparation for joint action with other armed forces in case of [Unreadable].
