Text

=== [Page 1] === The Sobsi has profited strongly from the fact that many foreign employers did too little of their own accord at a time when the Sobsi was not yet on the throne. Had a better social policy been pursued before the transfer of sovereignty, much would have been prevented. At the moment circumstances do not allow higher wages and expansion of social provisions — unless labour productivity were to rise. And in this situation the government always chooses the road that political interests, and not the road that economic interests, point out to it. Occasionally the authorities resist, for example in the case of violation of the law which stipulates that strikes may be held only after observing certain rules. Then a few strike leaders are prosecuted and the judge duly punishes. But the Sobsi and the communist women's association Gerwis appear in the courtroom with large wreaths. The defendants are photographed and addressed, and the effect is that such an attempt to maintain authority ends in a new undermining of authority. The communists play a large role in public life. They sit on all committees, for example in the celebration of national commemoration days, and then gladly occupy the executive posts. The whole Sobsi then turns out in force to put a Sobsi stamp on such a celebration.
